| DESIGN NAME: Heu 70th Anniversary PRIMARY FUNCTION: Logo and Visual Identity System INSPIRATION: The design integrates symbolic elements of the university's historical features and campus culture incorporating marine equipment and the school's historical heritage. The intertwining of wave-like lines forms a concise and dignified "70", complemented by the main building of the university and historical time points from 1953 to 2023, creating the visual representation of the logo design. The primary colors are blue and red, symbolizing the ocean and historical heritage. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In 2023, Harbin Engineering University celebrated its 70th anniversary with the integration of historical elements of the university's development and symbolic graphics representing campus culture in the design of its anniversary logo and visual identity system. The aim was to showcase the university's unique charm and rich heritage while fostering a sense of unity and belonging among students and faculty, and collectively embracing a brighter future for the institution. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design project spanned one year, encompassing anniversary-related graphic prints, multimedia displays, and cultural and creative products. Both the design timeline and quality were crucial. With involvement from multiple stakeholders, effective coordination and communication with school departments facilitated the successful delivery of the design on the scheduled anniversary day, receiving acclaim. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2022 in Shanghai and finished in July 2023 in Shanghai, and was exhibited in Harbin Engineering University in September 2023. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Simplify complex graphics into clean designs, combining multiple shapes to create new patterns. For flat applications, utilize printing techniques, while for three-dimensional applications, use 3D model files to produce 3D badges. The production process must consider various usage scenarios and technologies. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The design specifications adhere to research, sketching, computer-aided design, ensuring compliance with printing standards, digital multimedia display specifications, and mold production manufacturing standards. In actual application and exhibition, it meets basic advertising display standards and construction display safety standards. TAGS: Logo, Visual Identity, Brand, Anniversary Celebration, University RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research and collection of historical and cultural information about the school yielded specific data for extracting design languages and elements. By delving into these elements, the school's visual identity was transformed into graphical representations, providing material for the subsequent development of cultural and creative products. This process established a comprehensive approach to school brand visual design. CHALLENGE: Firstly, the school has a rich cultural and historical heritage. It's essential to extract representative elements and express them in tangible forms while maintaining a unified visual presentation technique. Secondly, integrating common aesthetic issues in art to achieve the perfect balance between artistic expression and practical application of the design work is crucial. NAME: Harbin Engineering University PROFILE: Harbin Engineering University (HEU) dates back to the PLA Military Engineering Institute founded in 1953. In 1970 its name changed to Harbin Shipbuilding Engineering Institute and then in 1994 to Harbin Engineering University. HEU consists of 20 colleges, 4 teaching departments (divisions and centers), more than 40 scientific research institutions and more than 150 scientific research and teaching laboratories. There are 6 national science innovative personnel bases, 1 national electrical and electronic teaching base, 7 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 1 national college students' cultural quality education base. In the field of shipbuilding, ocean and nuclear engineering, HEU has significant advanced technology and technical background including underwater robots, ship stablization, marine power, integrated navigation, underwater acoustic positioning, nuclear power simulation and large ship simulation ranking highly both domestically and abroad. It has become one of the major fundamental and applied research bases for naval architecture, ocean engineering, marine equipment technology and development in China. Based upon its focus on the development of internationalized, open education, HEU has established cooperative relationships with many universities and institutions including the University of Southampton, the University of Sydney, Bowman State Technical University, Seoul National University, Kyoto University, the International Atomic Energy Agency,and 5 global giants of shipping classification society, a total of more than 100 institutions from 25 countries. HEU has also been approved for the “Chinese Government Scholarship”, “Nation-building High Level Graduate Students”, and “Outstanding Undergraduate International Exchange" programs. It has jointly established a “Confucius Institute” with the South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University. |
