DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Tick Pen

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Detect and remove ticks

INSPIRATION:
I was inspired by when my dog got a tick bite outdoors and I didn't catch it in time, causing my pet to develop blood infections and skin problems. Early ticks are very small and difficult to detect because most animals have long hairs covering the bugs. Therefore, I use fluorescence detection technology (fluorescent biosensors) and tick biology to obtain information about ticks and intervene and treat them early.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Tick Pen is a pet health care product that uses fluorescence detection technology to detect and remove ticks on pets in advance. When a tick is exposed to the detection area, it triggers the pen to vibrate and change color to alert the user. Users can use the side buttons to control the threads of the pen tip to remove ticks without damaging the animal's skin. The product can detect ticks early through scanning and intervene, reducing the risk of blood and skin infections.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Users can use the UV light on the top of the tick pen to scan the pet's hair to know the area where the tick is located. When there is a fluorescent reaction from ticks in the detection area, the scale pen will vibrate to remind the user, and the colour of the button will change accordingly. Then the user can use the side buttons to control the thread of the pen tip to trap the bugs and slowly rotate and lift them up to remove the bugs. This method is safer than using tweezers or other sharp objects and protects the animal's skin from accidental harm.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in June 2022 in Chengdu, China and finished in December 2022 in Chengdu, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Based on the biological characteristics of the tick, when it is excited by ultraviolet light (360-380nm), part of its surface structure will reflect fluorescence. UV light sensors detect luminescent fluorescent objects and then produce a fluorescent reaction. As the electro-optical signal changes, the biometric object is displayed.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Height 150mm, depth 30mm, width 45mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This product protects pet health by detecting and removing ticks ahead of time. It uses a UV sensor (360-380nm) to detect fluorescent structures on the surface of the tick's body, and vibrates and changes the button colour to alert the user when detected. The detection efficacy was confirmed through experiments on real dog hair.Through early detection and intervention, this product can significantly reduce the risk of pets contracting blood infections and other illnesses from tick bites.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest part of this design 1. The most difficult thing is the accuracy of scanning tick positioning, because the fur of pets is different. For example, for dogs with long or thick hair, the effect of the UV sensor will be affected to a certain extent. 2. The early size of ticks is very small, and even if they are removed with tools, it is still difficult for ordinary people to operate.
