PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smart Fitness Device
INSPIRATION: An interactive project in Shanghai, through projection and ground led interaction, well showed the improvement of "ground" interaction in sports immersion and user experience, which provided me with inspirations. And the intelligent sports mirror shows that the extension of the "wall" screen changes the way of interaction. If there’s a fitness device that can extend the screen from the "wall" to the "ground" through two-way projection, how will the interaction change for users.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: bipro is a smart fitness device based on bi-directional projection. nowadays, more and more people choose to work out at home. different from existing products, bipro can project both on-wall and on-ground display. the extension of interaction space make it possible to create more immersive and inclusive indoor fitness experiences for different age groups, from children to elderly. bipro can recognize user's hand and foot movements. user can control the on-wall display through arms and gestures, and move their feet for ground interactions.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Bipro based on Bi-directional DLP lazer projection. DLP laser projection technology is in a leading position in projection quality, while price is tended to be stable and technology is mature. The size of laser projection components on the market has also been reduced. It carries visions of new type laser projection tech and development of inclusive intelligent devices.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Motion capture and projection are two key technologies for the design. The motion capture system based on computer vision has the accuracy that can reach the recognition of hand movements, which plays a key role in expanding the interactive approachs. There are mainly three laser projection technologies on the market: 3LCD/DLP/LCOS. DLP and LCOS have more advantages in the picture presentation effect. Technical maturity and relatively reasonable cost of DLP is the reason why bipro use it.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research employs a mixed-methods approach to investigate the viability of integrating bi-directional laser projection into home fitness devices. Utilizing market research, focus groups, and user surveys, the research assesses current trends in interactive fitness technology and user preferences across age groups. Additionally, prototyping and testing are conducted to evaluate potential design concepts and gather feedback. Findings aim to inform the development of a novel, inclusive home fitness solution that maximizes user engagement and accessibility.
CHALLENGE: How to design immersive and interesting interaction experience and form development are two challenges of the design. With both on-wall and ground projection, bipro was designed with unique UI and new interacting logic. Function and structure are the starting point of form design. Bipro uses the L-shape form, because after the test of the internal structure in the 3D software, the internal space of this model is more efficient and the structure is reasonable. At the same time, the form semantics of the L-shape meet the function of bi-directional projection.
