DESIGN NAME: Marginalia
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Clothes
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the vibrant colors, intricate historical fashion patterns, structures, and captivating textures of this bygone era, Jiayi Che tries to present a captivating juxtaposition of the chaotic nature of the period, where she also found unexpected harmony within. Che wants to draw the viewer into a world that blurs the lines between tradition and modernity. Studying "the old" guides her onto her self-discovery journey and defiance against the conformities she encountered.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Jiayi Che's collection "Marginalia" explores a visual narrative that traverses the realms of late medieval to early Renaissance Western historical clothing. The metaphorical cornerstone of "Marginalia" is my own creation of "Garden of Earthly Delights." Within this realm, the distinctive characters come to life, each donning ensembles that challenge the norms of femininity and historical fashion. A symphony of elements unfolds, weaving diversity into the fabric of each look.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The collection was started of close studies of Jiayi's personal vintage archive and historical pieces showcased in public resources to thrift stores. Along with the detailed studies on the constructions and making of garments, a narrative of the period is also researched with a focus on old fine art pieces to graphics of religious script. An important piece that sets the emotion and tone of the final rendering is The Garden of Earthly Delights by the Early Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch.
CHALLENGE: To find out about the decay of one beauty standard from the past and to revise it once again through a personal and modern perspective is quite a challenge in the design process. This point is mostly reflected in Jiayi's designs of the silhouette. One noted case is that the full rounded neck and shoulder area of female's torso that once spoke for the elegance and aristocratic supremacy is no longer desired form in the modern society as now it represents poor body gestures and health.
