DESIGN NAME: MT 12
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: Traditionally, the cabinetmaker covered a piece of furniture made by a carpenter with marquetry of noble and rare materials to give it value. Today, with globalization, these materials are losing their preciousness and uniqueness. The question was : "What value can I add to furniture today?" The answer came from looking at a beautiful landscape and figuring out how to bring it home. I began with wall sculptures of mountains and then desire to see it as central element on furniture.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Bring all the power of the mountain in your living room !
Today's connected world requires to live fast and efficiently. The real luxury today is the ability to slow down, take time and be surrounded with beautiful things made with care and respectful of the environment.
This completely handcarved coffee table evokes the poetry of the endless horizons and plunges the spectator into a contemplative state which is the best way for him to take a break, breathe and reconnect with himself.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The goal is to have the impression that the mountain is litterally coming out of the table. The experience is not only visual, in fact, wood is a tactile material and the carved part is not fragile and can be touched without problem.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The first carved landscape I carved was in 2015 when I came back to France after 5 years in Canada. The first Mountain table appears in 2017 with a small relief part and then the mountain ranges never stopped growing and they now take a central part on this deisgn.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The table top is entirely made by hand in my workshop. As I carve the mountain part by hand, each table is therefore unique. I use carving tools such as carving discs, rasps, gouges, etc.
The leg is made by a metalworker.
Three coats of oil-based finish are applied on the top.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Materials are Walnut wood and powder coated metal
Dimensions are 100 x 100 x 42 cm without sculpture
TAGS: moutain table, mountain coffe table, carved mountains, woodart, woodcarving, artistic furniture, woodcraft furniture, mountain furniture
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: There is a real challenge in carving large pieces of wood and believing that the table is made from a single piece of wood.
Illusion must be mastered in order to forget technique in favor of poetry.
Wood is a living material and all the woodworker skills are required to build a durable and sustainable product.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge on this project was ultimately to accept the idea of conceding a part of practicality for a more contemplative and poetic part. I like to say that on this table, there is a place to put your cup and a place to look at.
This table bridges the gap between art, craft and design.
