DESIGN NAME: SDC
PRIMARY FUNCTION: A sterilizing diaper changing station
INSPIRATION: Public diaper changing stations serve as breeding grounds for bacteria. Users are required to clean them before use, leading to prolonged diaper changing times and environmental pollution from the ingredients and packaging of cleaning supplies. Inadequate cleaning increases the risk of bacterial residue, posing a higher infection risk, particularly for infants with weaker immune systems, potentially leading to urinary tract infections. Additionally, used diapers cannot be immediately disposed of during diaper changes. Research indicates that the most common bacteria found on public diaper changing stations are typically present in feces, including Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus. These bacteria can be killed by heating at 100°C for 10 minutes.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SDC is a diaper changing station that utilizes the three states of water to sterilize. It includes hot water rinsing, steam sterilization, and a final drying phase. For safety reasons, it remains locked until sterilization is complete. It features a water tank connected to pipes for filtration and water recirculation. Its layout includes a diaper disposal area and storage space, minimizing contact between babies and bacteria. This design aims to provide users with a convenient and hygienic experience when changing diapers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Usage process:
1. When the green light is illuminated, it indicates that sterilization is complete, and the panel displays the temperature.
2. Users can place their belongings on themselves.
3. Change the baby's diaper.
4. After changing, dispose of the used diaper directly into the front trash bin, then close the diaper changing table for steam sterilization.
Internal cleaning process:
1. When the diaper table is closed, the interior begins to heat up, reaching 90 ° C to start rinsing.
2. Internal steam sterilization takes about 5 minutes (research shows E. coli can be killed at 75°C in 1 minute)
3. Drainage below / Warm air drying above.
4. After cleaning, the green light will illuminate, followed by drying and draining water.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January, 2023 in Taipei. It will undergo testing with experts during 2024 and is expected to enter the market in 2025.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Made of aluminum alloy by stamping, it features hot water rinsing, steam sterilization, and motion sensing.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: When closed, it measures 63cm in length, 12cm in width, and 160cm in height. Upon opening the diaper changing table, the total width increases to 92cm, and the height from the ground is 75cm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Firstly, we discovered issues regarding bacteria and maintenance of public diaper changing stations through news media. We compared existing styles of public diaper changing stations, including vertical and horizontal designs, to understand their pros and cons and confirm the advantages of the SDC. Based on the nature and requirements of the product, we constructed the original appearance of the SDC. We made numerous attempts to ensure the rationality of product operation and engaged in learning and discussions with mothers of infants to improve the SDC based on their suggestions and feedback.
CHALLENGE: In improving the SDC, we continuously evolved the overall configuration. To meet the demand for diaper waste disposal, after undergoing three iterations, we redesigned the overall configuration and concealed the water tank and pipes while adding storage space. This aimed to achieve a user-friendly and universally applicable design to better cater to the needs and workflow of both users and cleaning staff. Additionally, through temperature and indicator light displays on the outer interface, users can quickly ascertain the current status of the diaper changing station.
