DESIGN NAME: Yale Smart
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Video Doorbell
INSPIRATION: The doorbell lets you keep an eye on your doorstep and know what's happening, regardless of the time or the weather, while ensuring you never miss a visitor or delivery. It aims to reduce trigger notifications sent to users thanks to built-in AI capabilities to provide you with up-to-date information regarding the security of your doorstep and driveway. It integrates with other Yale smart products so you can check who is at the door in the app and if safe unlock the door with a Yale Smart Lock.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Yale Video Doorbell has a bespoke Yale design with organic and rounded corners. It offers a crisp 1080p full HD image, a 154° field of view and night vision for clear footage that can be viewed in the Yale Home app. Get a “call” on your phone when the doorbell rings, and detailed notifications when the motion sensors are triggered. The doorbell also offers AI monitoring features such as human (out of the box) and parcel (with a subscription) detection to never miss a delivery or guest again.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Video Doorbell can easily connect directly to the Internet and then be operated from anywhere in the world with a single application, the Yale Home app, using a mobile phone for smarter monitoring of your doorstep and driveway. It will detect motion and then light up the doorbell button to easily guide visitors where to press, homeowners will also get a "call" to notify them of a guest's presence. If anyone tries to steal the doorbell, a tamper alert will be sent to users' phones.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2022 in Malmö, Sweden. We first exhibited the new smart camera range at IFA Berlin in September 2023 and then launched the device in January 2024.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We wanted a discrete and elegant design that provided a premium look and feel to the hardware. Our video doorbell is a blend of aesthetics and function. We focused on an intuitive design, making it easy to use, so anyone can feel secure without sacrificing style and chose durable materials to withstand outdoor exposure. The use of 3D design tools and printing enabled us the create the perfect curves, giving it a neutral and soft appearance that blends well with different architectural styles.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We interviewed all the market regions to understand what features were most important to them in a smart doorbell, and to determine how competition looked in their region using market research, surveys, and interviews. We tested and evaluated a lot of competitive devices to understand the areas we saw a need for improvement on, like the mounting solution support of multiple power solutions to perfect these shortcomings within our own device.
CHALLENGE: Here we needed to create a solution that would give the user three options for how to power the doorbell so that they could ensure that their device was always powered in a way that best suited them. We needed to have a mounting solution that was able to support the different power options, while at the same time giving the user the possibility to angle the doorbell if needed. We used a fake wall to test the different design iterations until we developed a solution we were happy addressed this.
