| DESIGN NAME: New Tying PRIMARY FUNCTION: Building Set Toy INSPIRATION: New Tying is a building toy set which inspired by a Chinese traditional craftsmanship, "Tying". By retaining the Tying's special aesthetic and simplifying Tying's crafting method, this design creates a new crafting experience. With only two types of components, New Tying supports users to create a variety of structures and shapes through users own imagination in a very easy way. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design incorporates two types of components: bolt and strip parts. They feature simple shapes, reliable structures, and do not have strict material requirements. The design has the potential for industrial scale production, demonstrating high feasibility from a commercial perspective. Additionally, the product adheres to a linear aesthetic, using flexible strip materials to construct the framework through overlaying, bending, and interlocking, which is uncommon in the market where rigid peg or rod structures are prevalent in building set toys. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Firstly, Insert the bolt part through the hole on the strip part; Secondly, rotate the bolt part clockwise to lock the multiple strips together; Thirdly, use bolt parts and strip prats to create the skeleton structure. Design details: The top cover of the bolt part has a curved surface which serves as a directional cue, making it easier to grab and also easier for the user to exert force in a clockwise direction. The paddle structure on the bolt is slightly elastic allowing it to lock onto one or multiple strips. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Through multiple times of prototyping and testing to figure out the most efficient ways to combine different parts together, and use FEA and physical model to redesign the shape of the structures of the part, make it more tough and feasible. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The size of bolt part: 12mm*12mm*10mm The size of strip part: 12mm*0.8mm, varies length TAGS: Toy, Building set, Craft, Handicraft, Tradition, Heritage, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research aims to refine and improve the Tieing handicraft to create an easy-to learn, unique and culturally rich toy set, and to use the design to feed the development and dissemination of traditional Tieing handicraft, so as to promote its revitalization and transmission in contemporary society, rather than fading away as a declining traditional culture. CHALLENGE: The most difficult part was to balance the feasibility, usability and the rationality of mass-production in this design.
