DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: 428
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Candleholder
INSPIRATION: 428 Candleholder, emerged from a practical approach to design rather than starting from an external inspiration. Its name reflects its evolution from a square base to an octagonal shape, hence it gets the name 428 (4 sides transforming into 8). This concept not only showcases the beauty of the curves that emerge during the transition but also highlights the fact that design is also partially problem solving.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The 428 candleholder design is part of a "Transitions" themed design collection that was released in year 2020. This theme was conceived as an exploration to transition a shape from a primitive form to a more intricate one while creating intricate curvy details on the designed object. The 428 candle holder starts with a square foundation base and advances through to pentagon, hexagon, heptagon and finally to its octagonal tip shape.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The candle holder supports a tall candle with soft edges, forming a contrast against the candle holder's geometric curves.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The candle holder went into production by May, 2020 in İstanbul, Turkiye and the commercial release of the home decor object was June, 2020.
|
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The prototype was designed on a 3D application using curves tools. The brass tip is a later addition to the design to enhance the protection of the candle holder from heat. The tip is also housed inside the candle holder during the molding process.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Candleholder dimensions without a tall candle are 55 mm x55 mm x 170 mm
TAGS: candleholder, tall candle holder, table decor design, homeware design, home decoration

NAME: Kazoo Design
PROFILE: For more than 20 years, Zeynep and Kostas have been working with computer generated imagery to create pre-viz for architecture, ads, short films and visual effects in documentaries and movies. All these years have led up to the formation of their brand Kazoo, which is solely based around their passion to create. Kazoo design studio is a place where curiosity has no boundaries, ideas and inspiration can come any moment. Kazoo objects are designed digitally, then a prototype is printed and post-processed and molds are made in order to finally hand-cast copies. Materials that we currently use for our final products are: Ceramics, Porcelain, Polyurethane Resin and Acrylic Resin (Jesmonite). We strongly believe that our future lies in combining technology with hand-crafting and think thoroughly about the sustainability of our products. We mostly produce our products in our boutique atelier and only collaborate with boutique local makers who can provide us with the highest quality.

It is truly inspiring to see a design that not only challenges conventional aesthetics but also embodies a deep understanding of form and function. The "428" candleholder is a testament to the innovative spirit of contemporary homeware design, emerging from a practical approach that prioritizes problem-solving through design evolution. Its journey from a square base to an octagonal shape not only exemplifies the beauty in transition but also in the nuanced exploration of shapes and their transformation. This piece, belonging to the "Transitions" themed collection released in 2020, beautifully captures the essence of moving from primitive forms to intricate details, making it a remarkable addition to any space. The creative use of 3D applications and the thoughtful incorporation of a brass tip to protect from heat showcase a meticulous attention to both aesthetics and functionality. Overcoming the challenge of integrating the concept of 'Transitions' subtly, without compromising on visual appeal, is a commendable achievement. This work, by Zeynep and Konstantinos Paradeisopoulos, stands as a shining example of how design can seamlessly blend artistic expression with practical solutions, making it a worthy recipient of the A' Design Award in the Homeware Design category.
