| DESIGN NAME: Phantox Pro PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Grinder INSPIRATION: Drawing inspiration from camera lens apertures, where manual rotation directly affects image quality, this coffee grinder features a specialized dial that enables manual hyperfine adjustment. This working principle makes the grind setting both interactive and playful, transforming the task from routine to an engaging part of coffee preparation. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This manual coffee grinder fuses professional functionality with ease of use, allowing baristas to tailor each grind for diverse flavors. Its adjustment dial, inspired by camera lens apertures, makes grind setting interactive. The dial offers various grind settings within a 360 degree rotation, catering to any coffee type from espresso to cold brew. The Starblade, a patented burr design measuring 45mm in diameter, enables efficient, superior grinds to enhance sweetness and clarity of the coffee. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This dial covers various grind settings within a 360 degree rotation, featuring 12 main settings each subdivided into 10 finer notches at increments of 0.0167mm for hyperfine adjustments. This allows users to tailor each grind for any coffee type from espresso to cold brew, satisfying even the discerning coffee enthusiasts in pursuit of peak flavor. For added user friendliness, the markings beneath the dial intuitively guide users in selecting the ideal grind setting for different coffee flavors. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design and development of this manual coffee grinder started in December 2021, in Guangzhou. It was introduced to the Chinese market in Jun 2023. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The all metal casing, crafted with 5 axis CNC machining, exudes a refined mechanical aesthetic. Its central shaft, stabilized by three bearings, maintains a tight tolerance under 3microns. The precisely crafted adjustment dial offers 120 settings for hyperfine adjustment. Both the inner core and outer wall of the burr design are made from 420 stainless steel to enhance overall strength. The finely engraved surface offers a non-slip grip. It can pierce coffee beans before cutting, reducing compression during grinding and thus improving both sweetness and clarity of the coffee. For added efficiency, this design features a thinner outer wall and an enlarged inner core, increasing the grinding area by over 40 percent. CHALLENGE: The key challenge was to boost both user friendliness and efficiency of manual grinding. For this end, this grinder features a dial offering 120 settings within a 360-degree rotation, simplifying hyperfine adjustment for varied coffee flavors and eliminating the need for multiple rotations. Furthermore, its 45mm diameter burr, with 160 spikes, enhances grinding quality and efficiency. Precise adjustments to the angle, number, and depth of the burr further ensure a smoother grinding experience.
