| DESIGN NAME: Hanoi PRIMARY FUNCTION: Detachable Sofa INSPIRATION: Tower of Hanoi is a popular intelligence toy worldwide. The process of players moving the rings onto the towers inspired me to design Hanoi Sofa. I want to design a sofa that is easy and fun to assemble, a sofa that can optimize the volume and the cost of package, storage and transportation, and a sofa that is in line with the concept of sustainable design. This interesting structure has been validated through our experiment and the materials are all environmentally friendly. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Hanoi Sofa is designed for flat packaging. It can be easily assembled in 4 minutes without any tools or metal parts by attaching the upholstered parts to four wooden pillars. Vice versa, it's also easy to disassemble. The joints between wooden pillars and sofa base are with threads to reinforce the structure. Similarly, the caps at the top of the pillars are also threaded. The volume of the packaged sofa is only 2/5 of an assembled one. It optimizes the cost of package, storage and transportation. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Firstly, we need to rotate the four wooden pillars into the four screw holes in the wood base. Then we attach the backrests and armrests to the four pillars through the holes. Next, it is fixed by the threaded caps at the top of the wooden pillars. Finally, put the cushions on the sofa. So we assembled this sofa easily and quickly without tools or metal parts. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in Hangzhou in September 2023 and will be completed in Hangzhou in February 2024. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The key structure of Hanoi Sofa is made of beech wood. It's hard enough for us to carve stairs for the wooden pillars and threads for the joints and the caps at the top of the wooden pillars. By rotating the threaded parts, we can get a sturdy structure for the sofa. This interesting structure has been validated through our experiment. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Flat packaging size, W2050×D960×H320mm. Assembled sofa size, W2050×D980×H830mm. The volume of the packaged sofa is only 2/5 of an assembled one. It optimizes the cost of package, storage and transportation. We collected online information, including user feedback through our e-commerce department and learned that many sofas now are large in size, difficult to assemble, difficult to storage and with other problems. So we designed this sofa to solve these problems. CHALLENGE: The most difficult part of this project was to create a simple and interesting assembly method. There were already so many different types of detachable sofas. We had to come up with a structure that was simple, enables mass production, and has not been used on other sofas by anyone else. We did a lot of work on wood construction to ensure that the wood structure can be firmly assembled without tools, glue or metal parts.
