DESIGN NAME: Repawpose
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pet Bed
INSPIRATION: RePawpose is a design practice focused on used clothing upcycle design, and its final form is inspired by the fact that our pets love to lie on our clothes, the reason being that the scent makes them feel safe and comfortable.
By using old clothes in the ped bed, we hope it can give the old clothes a longer lifespan, and provide our pets a more comfortable place to rest.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Inspired by paper-folding which transforms 2D shapes into 3D objects, the bed is a cover without fillers, the user can put their old clothes in it and fold it into a bowl-shaped bed with cuddling arms.
The bed comes with different textiles for seasons and regions, it also has multiple color choices for various interior styles and personal tastes.
The old clothes inside it could help our pets get familiar with the product quickly, and over time the covers can be washed but still has the remaining scent or pheromone on the clothes.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To use the product, the users have to unzip the cover on the outer rim of the cover, then place their clothes in it, once finished zip up the cover, place the "cuffs" on the edge of the "bottom hem " and use the two buttons on the "lower hem" to secure the cuffs.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2023 and finished in October 2023

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Repawpose pet bed has three styles each designed to adapt to different temperatures from regions and seasons. For colder regions, it provides a style covered with faux fur. For warmer regions, the T/C blended fabric is used on the outside.
For the inside of the bed, a piece of 3mm thick felt is stitched on the bottom to provide enough structural strength when the bed is folded into the 3D shape.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the research, I looked into design practices that use clothes as part of the product, and I found the most essential value is its material: fabric, it is soft, stretchable, and deformable. Such high moldability gave the clothes upcycling many possibilities, but in my daily life I noticed my cats are always lying on my clothes, so I looked into the reason behind that, and it is the scent I left on my clothes and the pheromone they produce made them love it so much. So the idea of RePawpose was born, utilizing the softness of the fabric and the scent on it, to make a sustainable and loveable pet bed.
CHALLENGE: One of the hardest parts is to find a product that recycles clothes while giving enough incentives for users to do so. And by observation and research the hidden factor was discovered: the scent, which could help to make our pet to get more comfortable in a pet bed.
