DESIGN NAME: Bixdo W60 Star
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Toothbrush
INSPIRATION: The original intention of the Bixdo W60 electric toothbrush is to provide users with teeth whitening benefits during use. Therefore, in the design of the bristles, we utilized highly light-conductive materials to ensure maximum efficiency in conveying light to the teeth. We conducted various experiments and tests on the arrangement of the bristle clusters to ensure optimal contact with the teeth during the transmission of light. This ultimately guarantees the best curvature and method to ensure both functionality and aesthetics.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The bristles incorporate a novel optical fiber material, featuring a tiny optical fiber core at the center of the light-conducting bristles with a diameter of either 8 micrometers or 50 micrometers. The core has an exceptionally high refractive index, and due to the outer layer having a significantly lower refractive index than the core, it effectively seals light within the core. This ensures that light can only propagate along the optical fiber, achieving outstanding light-conducting performance. The addition of gum-protective bristles not only contributes to teeth whitening but also ensures thoughtful protection for the gums.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In daily use, activating the blue light mode can enhance light guidance performance, achieving a whitening effect of six shades in 14 days through brushing. Additionally, other functions can provide daily teeth brushing and cleaning benefits.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project commenced in Shanghai in November 2022, concluded its research and development phase in Shanghai by November 2023, and is scheduled for market release in May 2024. It was awarded the German National Design Prize in November 2023.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Qualitative testing was employed during the design process to assess the visual responses to light sensitivity and effects among different demographics at the same distance. User research and usage data from diverse groups were utilized to fine-tune the bristle deflection angle, ensuring a user experience that meets their expectations.
CHALLENGE: Achieving a balance between functionality and aesthetics is challenging. To ensure exceptional light transmission, a limited color palette was chosen for the bristles. To harmonize the product style with the bristle design, various color tests were conducted with ongoing adjustments. The application of the new optical fiber material requires continuous testing to ensure both environmental sustainability in production and high levels of sustainability in the product itself.
