DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Arnold-II

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Service Robot for Restaurants

INSPIRATION:
The artist got a lot of inspirations from 70s and 80s art and design. Under the impact of space age, a lot of industrial designs had very clean shape and bold colors.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This is a android design base on retrofuturism in a fictional world . The Arnold-II is the second type from Arnold Industries, and it's also the most successful product. It has a screen and keyboard for customers to order food, a oven to cook some specific food. There is a vacuum cleaner on both feet to do some cleaning.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The robot is equipped with basic microphones and speakers, and most of the time, customers will use voice communication to interact with the robot. The robot also has a display screen and keyboard to handle other specific situations. Additionally, the robot is equipped with a small oven to provide guests with free bread and cookies. Customers can also retrieve utensils and napkins from containers on the robot. The robot's legs are equipped with a simple vacuum cleaner and can perform some basic cleaning while moving. The robot uses wheels to move on smooth surfaces and switches to a walking mode when encountering obstacles like stairs or uneven terrain.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The design started in 2021 in Los Angeles and finished in August 2022 December in Los Angeles

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Computer Graphics, 3D Modeling, Texturing, and Rendering Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
When I was designing this robot, I prioritized what I considered important features. I also studied a lot of product designs from the 1970s and 1980s, and I found that they often favored bold colors and simple, square shapes. As a service robot, this robot should appear very friendly and non-threatening. Secondly, this robot needs to serve customers in a restaurant as a waiter, so it should have the functionality to take orders and payment.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The robot's head is equipped with a main camera and two auxiliary cameras, a speaker, and multiple microphones. The head can freely rotate 360 degrees to observe the surroundings. There are multiple sensors on the arms and thighs of the robot, each with indicator lights. The robot's arms can move freely like a human's, with additional joints in the upper and lower arms to enable a wider range of motion. On the robot's body, there is a keyboard, display screen, printer, card reader, small oven, and a small container. The legs are equipped with vacuum cleaners and wheels for mobility.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Since this is a robot in a fictional world, I had a lot of creative freedom when designing it to make it visually appealing. The world adopting retro-futurism as the basic aesthetic style allowed me to focus most of my research on seamlessly blending retro aesthetics with the futuristic elements I envisioned.

CHALLENGE:
The artist finds that creating this entirely new style of retro-futurism is the biggest challenge. He has extracted a lot of design inspiration from product designs of the 70s and 80s, but he struggles with how to apply these inspirations and elements to my sci-fi design concept. The artist needs to use retro elements to build a sci-fi world, and in the clash of these two elements, he needs to find a balance point where they can seamlessly come together in a perfect union.
