| DESIGN NAME: Peking Opera Mask PRIMARY FUNCTION: Toy INSPIRATION: The Peking Opera Mask is an intriguing educational toy designed to promote and introduce Peking Opera. The inspiration for the AR animation segment comes from Liang Xiang in Peking Opera, a stylized dance movement on stage. The goal is to help children understand Peking Opera characters through games, breaking through the limitations of time and space. This allows them to experience and learn about traditional Chinese culture. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Peking Opera Mask is an innovative educational tool using puzzles to familiarize children with Peking Opera characters, promoting understanding of its culture. The design team incorporates AR technology to replicate the unique stage style of Peking Opera as a reward for completing the puzzle. This reproduces dynamic effects, stimulating interest of children and fostering the intergenerational transmission and development of Peking Opera. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This product consists of 25 wooden blocks that can be used to create different masks of characters. 1. Children select a card to start. 2. By arranging and combining the blocks according to the pattern on the card, they enhance their manual dexterity. 3. AR animation serves as a reward, enhancing the portrayal of Peking Opera characters. Children can scan the puzzle with the app and watch animated performances of the roles, allowing them to imitate and memorize the behavior of these characters. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Building Blocks Puzzle: Crafted from natural beech wood, its colors, shapes, and textures cater to the aesthetic and tactile senses of children. They can engage in puzzle solving on any flat surface without the need for specific equipment or environments, allowing them to enjoy the fun of Peking Opera puzzles anytime, anywhere. Paint: Utilizing UV printing for affordability, aesthetic appeal, and safety. The Peking Opera Mask App is developed based on Unity. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 25 mm x 5 mm x 25 mm TAGS: Toys, Educational Tools, Peking Opera, Building Blocks Puzzle, AR RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Peking Opera is a valuable heritage of Chinese traditional drama and has a profound influence on Chinese culture and even global culture. In recent years, the popularity of Peking Opera among children has declined, primarily because they find it challenging to understand the roles, face limited opportunities for direct engagement, and traditional forms fail to capture their interest. CHALLENGE: The greatest creativity and challenge of the Peking Opera Mask lies in its abstraction of Peking Opera characters, supplemented by AR technology, presenting Peking Opera to children in a new form. It breaks the traditional Peking Opera performance mode, allowing children to personally participate in constructing Peking Opera characters and experiencing Peking Opera culture up close. Another challenge is extracting the characteristics of each character while preserving the block masks.
