DESIGN NAME: Cloudy Water Xiaoxiang Shadow
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Panel
INSPIRATION: The product draws inspiration from porcelain and water ink in Chinese culture. With the low saturated natural grey tones and Chinese inks as the medium, it uses a handdripping spray painting technique to restore the texture of Tianmu porcelain, like rabbit hair. Also, it highlights the Tianmu porcelain colour through the high gloss and silver powder materials, outlining the visual appearance of the mountains and clouds and realising the harmony of Tianmu porcelain colour and cultural aesthetics.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Cloudy Water and Xiaoxiang Shadow is a new seasonal colour developed by Xiaosen in collaboration with Polytechnic University of Milan. Inspired by the glazing colour of Jian Kiln Tianmu Porcelain, which is a famous porcelain of the Song Dynasty in Fujian. By employing a handdripping spray painting technique, it conveys the abstraction of the empty mountains and misty clouds, the majestic and unadorned aesthetics of the Song Dynasty through medium material of traditional Chinese ink.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This art piece amalgamates artistry with practicality to offer an aesthetic solution for home decor. Unlike other solid coloured products, this piece encompasses porcelain and ink elements derived from traditional culture. This gives it a distinctive surface treatment, panel texture, and craftsmanship, making it both longlasting and decorative. As a result, it is not only suitable for home decor but can also be employed as a piece of art that creates a cultural and emotional bond with the user.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: It was designed and developed in March 2023 in Beijing and launched in August 2023 in China.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The majority of wood panels available in the market are characterized by solid colours, needing design and texture, thereby contributing to a monotonous home environment. The design team has proposed an aesthetic solution by presenting different finishes. This approach entails integrating elements of porcelain and ink from Chinese culture into the wood panelling design. Combining traditional elements with modern design principles, it provides a visually appealing yet distinct home environment.
CHALLENGE: The objective was to integrate traditional Chinese elements more effectively into the work. This was achieved using ink sprays, which constructed an abstract mood depicting empty mountains and misty clouds. In addition, the texture details of Tianmu rabbit hair porcelain were presented in a different visual manifestation. The high gloss treatment on the surface accentuates the brightness and lustre while emphasizing the porcelain colour texture and increasing the expressive force of the product.
