| DESIGN NAME: CRUX PRIMARY FUNCTION: Meditation Seat INSPIRATION: Crux's design is inspired by the ancient cross-legged sitting posture, commonly known as the Lotus position, that has been passed down through generations from our ancestors to the present day. This timeless presence observed in archaeological remains serves as a key inspiration in the development of Crux. Rooted in ancient practices, this sitting position reflects a deep historical and cultural connection to meditation traditions. The enduring appeal of the Lotus position across different cultures and eras continues to shape the form and function of meditation chairs. It not only symbolizes physical stability and comfort, but also embodies the pursuit of mindfulness and inner peace sought by practitioners worldwide. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Crux represents a meticulously crafted seating unit designed to provide unparalleled support and comfort for individuals engaging in prolonged meditation sessions. Beyond merely accommodating the human form, Crux embodies a holistic approach to enhancing users' physical and mental well-being during meditation endeavors. Rooted in the principles of ergonomic design, Crux seamlessly integrates cultural evolution with contemporary functionality. Notably, the selection of buckwheat seeds over traditional sponge materials, coupled with linen fabric, distinguishes Crux by mitigating issues of perspiration and bacterial accumulation. This design choice ensures a hygienic and comfortable meditation experience, promoting prolonged focus and tranquility for practitioners. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The product is used while sitting and helps you do other positions by providing the user with three basic positions of meditation: Lotus, Burmese and Seiza. You will have a nice experience when you sit with Crux's form that supports your body. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Linen fabric is incorporated into the seating unit to reduce perspiration, thus enhancing user comfort during prolonged meditation sessions. This material choice not only promotes a more enjoyable sensory experience but also contributes to the overall cleanliness of the product. Instead of traditional sponge materials, Crux utilizes buckwheat seeds, offering a more hygienic and environmentally friendly alternative. Unlike sponges, which are susceptible to bacterial growth and odors, buckwheat seeds maintain a cleaner and fresher environment, ensuring a more sanitary meditation practice. Additionally, the internal skeleton of Crux is crafted from wood, providing structural integrity and stability to support users throughout their meditation sessions. This blend of materials reflects a thoughtful consideration for both user comfort and environmental sustainability, highlighting Crux's commitment to holistic well-being. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 600mm x Depth 700mm x Height 200mm TAGS: meditation, seat, cross legged, furniture, seat, mindfullness, wellbeing, linen, buckwheat seeds RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Crux emerged from interest in the impact of mindfulness and meditation on well-being. In the research, 3D software and 3D printing were used for prototyping by blending design, ergonomics and sustainability. Ergonomic considerations also guided material choices, shaping the development of Crux. Materials such as buckwheat seeds and linen increase hygiene and comfort with recyclable materials that promote sustainability. Individuals meditating confirmed that Crux can deliver success by showcasing the potential of holistic design to meet societal needs and the intersection of design, mindfulness, and sustainability for future innovations. CHALLENGE: When Crux was designed, it was aimed to provide a comfortable sitting position for both meditators and individuals who are culturally accustomed to sitting cross-legged. One of the challenging factors was designing a product that these two audiences would share and its biggest advantage and disadvantage at the same time when doing research was that there were very few examples of the original shape to reference.
