INSPIRATION: This design blends modern Chinese style with classic elements from the Palace Museum collections. The logo features a regal palace cat, surrounded by motifs like the Forbidden City eaves, papilionoid, and peach blossoms to reveal the warmth of ancient life. The makeup palette also incorporates cat and butterfly motifs, signifying that the product can create diverse natural makeup looks. This also evokes the image of a gentle Eastern beauty and the vibrancy of spring, adding a romantic touch.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Rooted in traditional Chinese culture, MAOGEPING BEAUTY offers a cosmetic line that distills the natural essence of the treasures at the Palace Museum into its packaging. Crafted for female users, this series merges Eastern aesthetics with exquisite, modern craftsmanship. Inside, the boxes for products form a vivid scene, where butterflies flutter amid blossoms and regal palace cats frolic. Here, aesthetics, interactivity, and portability converge into a refreshing user experience.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The interior packaging in a drawer style elevates the makeup routine beyond the ordinary. The inner side is adorned with a scroll featuring Chinese elements such as auspicious clouds and the painting of Ocean Waves, revealing an interactive visual treat upon flipping the panel. The cosmetic box is portable, with an inbuilt mirror and a leather handle atop for easy makeup application on the go. The 3D embossed crocodile patterns on the lipstick and mascara tubes can resist slips and fingerprints.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design and development of this series started in November 2021, in Hangzhou. It was introduced to the Chinese market in July 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: These cosmetic cases are made from porcelain white sheet material, exuding a simple yet elegant charm. At their center is a hexagonal Loong dragon emblem, adorned with gold trimmed edges to evoke a noble sense reminiscent of gold inlaid jade. The lipstick and mascara tubes feature 3D embossed crocodile patterns inspired by the Catalog of Marine Creatures Collected in the Qing Palace, creating a relief effect.

This packaging design, inspired Chinese traditional culture especially the Palace Museum collections, showcases these elements in a new avatar to its users. It serves as a portal for cultural exchange and motivates designers to break the mold of uniformity through the infusion of traditional cultural elements.
CHALLENGE: Addressing the challenge of fusing classic imagery with modern design, this packaging integrates lively motifs such as regal palace cats, butterflies, and peach blossoms from the Palace Museum collections, all refined with modern craftsmanship. This design rejuvenates traditional culture and pioneers a new trend of China chic. Within, the product boxes form a scene alive with butterflies among blossoms and palace cats frolicking, evoking a grand court style as well as a vivid and vibrant appeal.
