DESIGN NAME: FTCSD- Fruit tree cooling spray device
PRIMARY FUNCTION: A bamboo made mist cooling device.
INSPIRATION: In recent years, high temperature records have been broken all over the world. This show that global temperatures will be even worse in the future.
High temperature cause droughts and affect agriculture, fishing, animal husbandry even human health. Many fruit trees are caused heat damage, affecting development and harvested by high temperatures. In addition, frequent droughts lead to increased demand for agricultural water.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a non-electric device made of bamboo, which is not only lightweight and inexpensive but also creates economic and environmental benefits for the local area. The bamboo lattice captures moisture from the air and enhances dew collection capacity. After spraying water mist, the water particles in the air will evaporate, absorbing a significant amount of heat from the environment, resulting in regional cooling effects.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It adopts the double layer modeling structure. The top uses the mesh produced after weaving to collect dew in the air, more over it can also block a sun.
The bottom uses the principle of leverage. when you step on the pole, water mist can be easily sprayed and make the temperature drop. The spray switch is detail design. The groove design makes it easy to pull the cord and it will not be lost when pulling it down. The whole use process can make the user have a pleasant use experience.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started at the beginning of June 2022 and was completed in April 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: After manufacturing each component using bamboo craftsmanship, It transports them to the orchard for assembly and completion. The dew-catching device of FTCSD utilizes bamboo woven mesh to capture water vapor, and through a guiding structure, the water is directed and collected in a water reservoir to supply the misting system.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The device total height:4327mm. Main body's bottom :700mm Ø , Top :2345mm Ø. The maximum diameter of the water guide device: 2042mm Ø, Height: 370mm. The maximum diameter of the dew collection device: 1645mm Ø, Height: 750mm. The maximum diameter of the water reservoir: 1693mm Ø, Height: 280mm, a maximum capacity: 18.4 liters.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The high temperatures of recent years made us aware of the difficulties ahead for agriculture. In the original draft, we used solar power to automate water spraying. When we investigated further, we found that farmers might not be able to afford it because of the large scale. So, we searched local resources and simple scientific principles before redesigned. We also changed a lot of structures to enhance the stability of the device and the efficiency of catching dew.
CHALLENGE: It needs to consider the convenience of overall assembly so that farmers can easily install it in the orchard. Therefore, our team has simulated various installation processes. We have also researched bamboo materials from the local African region, as each type of bamboo has different characteristics, requiring careful consideration of material properties.
