DESIGN NAME: Casa de Mar
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Single Family Residence
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the symbiotic relationship between architecture and nature, this project seamlessly blends interior and exterior spaces, embracing the surrounding beauty. A central pool generates refreshing breezes through evaporation, harnessing natural elements for enhanced living. Local materials honor the region's heritage, while tranquil interior design promotes relaxation and well-being.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Casa de Mar is a single-family residence located in the northern part of the city of Mérida, Yucatán. The central concept on which this project is based is the symbiotic relationship between architecture and the surrounding nature. The goal is to create interconnected spaces that allow for the enjoyment of the tranquility of the gardens, while taking advantage of the benefits of natural ventilation and lighting.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Users have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the serene gardens and connect with nature. The central pool serves as a refreshing focal point, generating a cool breeze through water evaporation. The design seamlessly merges the interior and exterior spaces, fostering a harmonious connection with the surroundings. Separate entrances provide privacy and comfort, catering to social gatherings and intimate family moments. The interior spaces are carefully crafted to promote relaxation and well-being, utilizing natural materials, soft textures, and soothing lighting.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project design started late 2021, build was initialized January 2022 and completed January 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Initially, site analysis in Mérida, considered climate. This informed the design aiming to establish a symbiotic relationship between architecture and nature. CAD software facilitated detailed digital models, merging interior and exterior. A central horseshoe-shaped construction utilized evaporative cooling for natural air conditioning. The program included distinct social and private areas with separate entrances, ensuring privacy and comfort. Local materials like stone and wood were chosen for durability, low maintenance, and integration with the environment.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Site analysis considered topography, orientation, and winds to optimize natural light, views, and airflow. Local materials like stone and wood were chosen for sustainability and contextual harmony. Durability and low maintenance guided material and finish choices. Energy-efficient lighting, insulation, and smart home technology were integrated for comfort and energy management.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Design research for Casa de Mar involved a thorough analysis of the site's topography and climate. The land's features and weather conditions were carefully studied to strategically position the house, optimize natural light, and create a comfortable living space. CAD software was used to develop detailed models and visualizations, refining the design to seamlessly merge the interior and exterior. Drawing inspiration from the region's cultural heritage, local materials and finishes were incorporated to promote a sense of identity.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to harmoniously blend architecture with nature, integrating the interior and exterior spaces. Overcoming this required spatial planning, material selection, and elements that foster a connection with the surroundings. The climate posed another hurdle, which led to the inclusion of a central pool for natural cooling. Sourcing suitable materials that aligned with the design vision and regional context was a challenge. Ensuring privacy was also a consideration, resulting in carefully planned separate entrances and vestibules for social and private areas.
