DESIGN NAME: Geolens
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Application
INSPIRATION: We live on a planet with so many wonderful natural phenomena, yet we rarely notice and truly understand them. The student years are a great time to be exposed to this natural geography, so we created "Geolens" to improve students' geographic awareness in a more fun and immersive way.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The app fills a gap in the market by providing students ages from 5 to 14 with a new way to learn about natural geography, based on HoloLens2 devices that allow them to explore and photograph in realistic environments through AR glasses, while gaining deeper knowledge of natural geography based on AR recognition and educational resources from National Geographic Kids. In addition, the app can inspire students to explore and encourage them to get out and interact with nature.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When students feel bored with geography in class, they can open the Geolens App on their cell phones, view recommended adventure places and related information, and choose a destination. Once students arrive at the destination, they put on their AR glasses and take a photo through eye-movement and gesture operations. Geolens will scan the object in the photo, match it with the data in the resource library, and pop up learning cards and knowledge models. Students can learn about the geography of the target object, collect the knowledge cards, share the photos taken in the community, and review the knowledge in the trail map.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Launch in Zhejiang, China in 2023 and completion in 2024

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Geolens is based on the HoloLens2 device, which is rich in interaction, has strong developer support and ecosystem, and is integrated with AR recognition technology. We have also built a robust data repository that combines with national geographic resources to ensure an excellent user experience. A mobile app for the customers communicates with the system via Bluetooth, WIFI, GPS technologies. UX-UI interaction and the prototype of the app are designed in Figma Software.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The glasses-side app is adapted for HoloLens2 devices.
The mobile app responds to all screen sizes and is universally available for all Android and iOS phones.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Geolens' design study involved in-depth interviews, observations and surveys, and the behaviors and attitudes of students ages 5-14 toward learning physical geography. The study demonstrates the need for a fun and immersive natural geography learning tool to improve students' knowledge of physical geography. geolens is integrated with nature exploration to record natural landscapes while learning geography by taking pictures, which increases students' independent initiative and motivation unlike traditional boring classroom teaching.
CHALLENGE: 1. Precise definition of the target group. We found that the target group was inconsistently defined in related studies by checking a large number of papers, mainly caused by the research direction, research content, and research object. We also combined the results of the survey questionnaire to continuously modify the target object, and finally determined the target object as students aged 5-14.
2. The UI design specification of AR glasses interface is difficult to determine. At present, there are few AR-related applications in the market, and it is difficult for us to find a reasonable and effective UI design specification.
