| DESIGN NAME: Live Sashimi PRIMARY FUNCTION: Apparels INSPIRATION: Sashimi is a Japanese tradition practiced in certain villages across Japan. The ceremony commences with skilled chefs delicately separating the flesh and bones of the seafood, preparing it for each meal. As a part of the ritual, the seafood is placed in a tub, where it often exhibits its natural instinct to swim around. In recent years, concerns have arisen due to incidents involving crabs and dolphins in the surrounding areas attacking human beings. These events have prompted the local community to question whether this celebration should continue or not. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The collection showcases the exquisite art of ruching, a highly popular sewing technique embraced by the fashion industry. Peiyang skillfully employed this technique to add dimension and texture to her designs. Peiyang initiated the creative process by sketching her inspirations using pencil drawings. She further enhanced these sketches through Photoshop. Subsequently, she meticulously ruched a diverse array of fabrics using different types of elastics. Peiyang demonstrated her expertise by applying ruching both along the straight grain and at biased angles, achieving captivating effects. The fabric choices encompass a wide range, including velvet, satin, silk, and cotton, each contributing its unique qualities to the collection. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Initially, Peiyang did not consider the idea of incorporating ruching into her fabric designs. It was her friends who suggested this technique, which ultimately replaced her initial plan of using sequins to depict her impression of sea products. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2022 in New York City and finished in April 2023, and will be showcased in London Fashion Week in September 2023. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Peiyang took on the design and manufacturing process, utilizing the convenient services provided by Spoonflower's website to print the fabric for her creations. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: velvet Satin silk cotton all garments are manufactured under US size 2 the length of the fabric is roughly 120cm the width is roughly around 100 cm TAGS: Tradition, East Asian, Ethical Issues, Ruching, Textile Design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research process commenced with online exploration, allowing Peiyang to gather valuable information and insights. Building upon her extensive knowledge of fashion history, she embarked on an experimental journey. The objective of this collection is to push the boundaries of elastic application on fabrics. Peiyang sought to challenge the conventional perception of elastics as mere trims by transforming them into artistic elements. In her vision, elastics transcend their utilitarian nature to become integral components of wearable art. CHALLENGE: This collection marks Peiyang's inaugural foray into the realm of ruching technique experimentation. In her artistic journey, she has explored various pathways, including macrame-braiding, machine knitting, hand knitting, and crochet, employing these methods to craft her unique artworks.
