PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Life Raft

INSPIRATION:
The design inspiration comes from the demand for disaster relief in daily life and the pursuit of rapid response and efficient rescue methods. This design hopes to use technical means to solve the rescue problems in flood disasters and provide more survival opportunities for the affected people.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Scalability : Floating rafts are folded into capsules in daily time, occupy a small space, and are easy to set up in coastal cities along the river. Once the flood hits, it can be quickly expanded into a large floating raft. Quick response : Able to respond quickly to flood alerts, automatically deploy and drop where needed. The automated response capability can greatly improve the efficiency of rescue operations. Sustainability : Made of environmentally friendly materials, and can be resued.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The floating raft can receive flood warnings and respond automatically by wirelessly communicating with the city 's monitoring system. In addition, after deployment, the floating raft can collect information about the surrounding environment through sensors and cameras and transmit this information to rescuers to help them better understand the situation in the rescue area.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project is completed in Suzhou from 2021 to 2022.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The design is based on advanced materials science, automation control and structural engineering techniques. Using high-strength, wear-resistant and lightweight materials which ensured the device can withstand the test of flood environments. At the same time, an intelligent control system was added to it which enable the floating raft automatically expand according to the situation.

Folding state dimensions: Length: Approximately 30 cm to 50 cm Width: Approximately 20 cm to 30 cm Height: Approximately 10 cm to 20 cm Unfolded state dimensions: Length: Approximately 3 meters to 6 meters Width: Approximately 2 meters to 4 meters Height: Approximately 0.5 meters to 1 meter

CHALLENGE:
Material selection : Select both lightweight and powerful materials, so that the floating raft can work normally in harsh flood environments and maintain structural stability. Automatic control : ensure that the floating raft can accurately identify and respond to flood warnings, and automatically expand and fold under different environmental conditions. Sustainability : Consider how to make the design sustainable, including the reuse and recycling of materials.
