DESIGN NAME: Flowing
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Rattan Chair
INSPIRATION: The primary weaving material I use in the chair design is rattan which is 100% renewable and environmentally friendly. The wood I choose is birch, which has a similar color and texture to rattan. The thick rattan wickers go through the whole chair to form the legs, cushion, backrest, and armrest, with organic patterns woven between them. The ideation is inspired by the curves of the rivers and clouds flowing through the mountains in traditional Chinese landscape paintings.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project 'FLOWING' focuses on the innovation of rattan weaving technology and its application in furniture design. The critical point is to change the traditional 2-dimensional decorative weaving into 3-dimensional spatial and functional weaving and explore the extreme organic shape it can achieve.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design of this chair aims to ensure comfort while exploring the extreme shape that rattan weaving can achieve. It allows the chair to transcend its primary function as furniture and become a decorative artwork in the space.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2021 and finished in May 2023 in the UK, and was exhibited in Central saint martins in June 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The weaving material used in my design is rattan, and the wooden material is birch wood. The wicker undergoes processes such as steaming and heat bending to achieve the desired curves, and it is combined with the wooden frame. The weaving part is completed by Chinese artisans skilled in weaving.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width: 80CM, Depth: 110CM, Height: 100CM

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I conducted extensive market research on existing rattan furniture products and found that many of them only use rattan as a surface decorative element, such as for seat and cabinet door decorations. Therefore, I wanted to break away from this limitation of two-dimensional weaving confined to the surface. Based on this, I conducted numerous experiments on the material, exploring the elasticity, flexibility, and durability of rattan of different thicknesses. I utilized its different physical properties in the design of various parts of the chair, aiming to achieve a balance between functionality and aesthetics.
CHALLENGE: The challenge lies in how to transform traditional two-dimensional weaving into three-dimensional weaving through material experiments, as well as how to incorporate Chinese traditional cultural elements into contemporary furniture design.
