DESIGN NAME: So Good
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Music video set design
INSPIRATION: Inspiration naturally comes from the possibility of how love transforms into its materialistic form. Questions that can be asked are what is the color of love, when does love occur, how does it transpire and how does it affect one's behavior and desires. The drive of the design is the emotional capabilities and the visual response to when love is felt growing within people. Love can sometimes be prickly, suffocating, yet liberating. Primary focus is to bring love in the shape of objects and shade of colors that represent curiosity, affection, lust and lastly passion.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: So Good is a music video starring Kaylan a musician local to Atlanta. In total 5 designs were accomplished for the scenic establishment and properties. So Good captures a strong sense of love and desire with the hint of lust. The set designs focus on the portray of how love fattens. As the designer's hope, the set design is to perform as an extension to represent how love feels like. The visualization of love in various settings shows how versatile and prosperous love can be.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The direction of this music video started with the director, executive producer(s), director of photography, and myself the production designer. The conversation also invited the music artist in as to understand a visual representation the artist desires to portray through the medium of videography is pivotal to the creation of any music video. Production designers are not only required to understand the concept, predominant mood, and color scheme in order to capture the visuals through physical and digital scenic elements, location and properties, but also in charge of symbolism and choices of component that exist as part of the set design. In the most effective way of creating a tone as the production designer is to engage in communication in a timely and creative manner. Research is expected to closely align with the pre-determined artistic guidelines discussed with the production heads and artist. The most successful workflow is to first establish an understanding of the music video’s intent with the director and avoid any confusion with design directions altogether. Production designers are equally responsible to give a design pitch to the director and producers for final approval. This process includes sketching, vigorous research, image compilation (boards), and renderings of designs. Once the design pitch is approved, the production designer works with the given budget to plan an effective procurement of all items that will go on set. In a more professional setting, the set dresser will come in to decorate the set with the procured items, however, for this music video in particular, the production designer was privileged to be able to dress the set according to the established design plan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Nowadays, entertainment embraces a wide range of technology. While AI, AR, VR, XR and many more cutting-edge technologies are rapidly emerging into the production process, the physical and practical props still have much reasoning to be esteemed. In production design, the practicals establish the physical environment. Whether that be a combination of virtual materials and physical objects, yet the physicality of the scenic elements still hold much power to communicate a message embedded in each form of media.
For the music video So Good, practicals take up huge significance in realizing the set.
Materials range from fabric for fluidity, seasonal foliage decorations for dynamic, use of lighting with vivid colors of gel all contribute to establishing the mood and setting of the desired outcome with the space.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions vary for each design.
All design dimensions stay under 10'x10' square footage.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Art history, Renaissance period, psychology of color, Greek mythology, modern day celebrations, and cultural difference how intimacy is understood by different peoples and places.
CHALLENGE: The biggest creative challenge has to be about time. Time is always a huge determinant of how much longer the shoot will continue for, how much longer is provided to set up the scene, how much more detail can be added until a design is presented to the executive members for the final approval. Usually time seems to work against the quality of work, however, this production allowed much creativity to flow from the constraints of time and the pressure actually extracted much concise and befitting concepts. A lot of experience with time constraints was negative, but for this project specifically, I enjoyed racing time as a creative opponent.
