PRIMARY FUNCTION: Board Game
INSPIRATION: By a design workshop with Denmark and the live observation revealed that children lack understanding of carbon footprint and carbon offset concepts, impacting their attitudes towards sustainability. Key issues identified include the abuse of carbon offsetting, negative effects on natural diversity and land rights. The transportation in carbon emissions and the importance of a low-carbon diet were also highlighted. Early education on low-carbon initiatives can foster children's interest in sustainable practices.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Teach children about the importance of reducing carbon footprint. Kids take on the role of managers and learn to make the lowest carbon footprint burger by sourcing ingredients via different transportation methods. The function cards allowing players to resist other players, planting trees or trading carbon. The game fosters eco-consciousness and encourages them to take responsibility for their impact on the environment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In this game, kids choose the transportation routes, considering the carbon footprint of different modes of transport. They focus on the carbon footprint of food ingredients. They create a burger, while considering each ingredient's carbon footprint. The goal is to minimize the overall carbon emissions by getting low-carbon ingredients. The game educates students about carbon footprint, emphasizing the environmental impact of transportation and food choices.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: E-COCO began its thinking and design in Taiwan in November 2022, was completed in February 2023, and was exhibited in Milan, Italy in March 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: With various skills to create: The hard cards, which provide a 3D feeling, are created by bonding the laser-cut leather paper. Another cards have rounded edges, which are achieved by using knife molds to cut smooth curves. This not only enhances the tactile experience but also ensures the safety of the players. The game characters are crafted using CNC on wooden blocks, resulting in a relief effect that adds depth and visual appeal to the components.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: By the interviews, the experts were positive about integrating environmental awareness into play. Since traditional ones often lack education on carbon footprints, making it challenging to teach concepts like ESG, sustainability, and carbon rights.
And conducting initial promotions and trials allows us to gather feedback and gauge public satisfaction. Hope to foster a generation that is not only knowledgeable about sustainability but also passionate about making a positive impact on the world.
CHALLENGE: An iterative process of testing and deduction was required to verify the feasibility and difficulty of the game to ensure that children could understand the rules and the meaning behind the game. Visually, attractive icons are designed for kids to stimulate their interest. Tactilely, it takes several printings of paper to find the right texture to enhance the experience. It is time-consuming and requires a lot of patience in testing and reflecting before the game be implemented.
