Our leather is up-cycled in Portugal and comes from surplus stock of luxury tanneries. That allows us to keep our suppliers close and preserve the Local & Circular Economy.
We choose to manufacture with leather because, for now, leather is a meat industry by-product, so it still must be treated and transformed. Beyond that, leather is also a very resistant material therefore long-lasting. That is why our low-impact goods are made to last generations.
Saddle stitching is a technique that is in danger of dying out or going obsolete in Portugal and it’s hard to find places that still teach these skills. ASA runs a series of Workshops where we teach how to make your own leather goods. It is something very significant for us, because we want to pass on the passion and raise the appreciation for traditional craftsmanship to future generations. This will Empower the future Leather Goods Designers & Makers by providing them with training/skill sets.

The Switchbag, a masterpiece that recently caught my attention, is a testament to the marriage of functionality with aesthetic elegance, a rarity in the realm of fashion and travel accessories design. Its inspiration, drawn from the architectural geometrical forms and the vibrant hues of Mondrian paintings, not only pays homage to the mystical energy between the forces that govern nature and the universe but also speaks volumes about its ability to adapt to its wearer's needs. This backpack goes beyond its primary function, transforming into an office, a nomadic home, and even a piece of decor, reflecting the different sides we show to the world. The pandemic-inspired theme of mental health, represented through its minimalist exterior and colorful, imaginative interior, resonates deeply, highlighting the importance of acknowledging the various facets of our being. The meticulous research, involving design trends, 3D and 2D modeling, along with the creation of three hand-sewn prototypes, showcases a commitment to excellence. Moreover, the challenge of hand-stitching and producing molds that perfectly fit together, especially when working with upcycled leather, further underlines the dedication and skill involved in bringing this concept to life. The Switchbag is not just a backpack; it is a statement about the resilience and adaptability of the human spirit, encapsulated beautifully in its design. This achievement by Stephanie Branco is indeed a remarkable contribution to the field of Fashion and Travel Accessories Design.
