| DESIGN NAME: Leather Gem PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bag INSPIRATION: Taking inspiration from the success of the iconic THEYKNOW acrylic Gem Bag, we aimed to push the boundaries further by skillfully combining the supple softness of leather with the exquisite facets of gemstones, deriving the new Leather Gem Bag. Our ultimate goal is to challenge preconceived notions of gemstones, embracing a diverse range of sizes, materials, and functionality, while preserving the timeless elegance of a leather bag that effortlessly accompanies the wearer on various occasions. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Leather Gem Bag, a testament to exquisite design and meticulous craftsmanship. Crafted from molded leather, its seamless, gemstone-inspired shape exudes precision. With minimalist hardware and versatile dimensions, it effortlessly holds essentials while complementing any outfit. The Leather Gem Bag is the epitome of functionality and timeless elegance, a sophisticated accessory for those who value impeccable style. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Operating the Leather Gem Bag is as seamless as its gemstone-inspired shape. With a gentle pull on the geometric-shaped leather puller, the magnetic closure effortlessly reveals the spacious interior. Despite its unique 3D gem shape, crafted from soft leather, the bag maintains its functionality. Minimalist hardware adds a touch of elegance without compromising the bag's sleek design. This harmonious blend of form and function ensures the Leather Gem Bag is both a statement piece and a practical accessory for any occasion. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design concept through production and distribution of Gem Bag was completed in 2022 from Shanghai. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The outer layer of the Leather Gem Bag is meticulously molded from a single piece of calf leather, resulting in a strikingly smooth and seamless surface that accentuates the sharp edges of the gemstone-inspired shape. The lining is made of microfiber leather, offering a luxurious touch and durability. Enhancing both functionality and aesthetics, a geometric-shaped leather puller adorns the top, facilitating easy access while maintaining a minimalist hardware design. The bag features a magnetic closure for effortless opening and closing, while the inclusion of metal feet adds a subtle touch of sophistication. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Bag: 17*17*9cm Handle: 18cm TAGS: THEYKNOW, leather gem bag, top handle bag RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research for the Leather Gem Bag involved compiling technical knowledge from team members experienced in the jewelry industry and fashion houses. By combining their expertise with market research, we selected the best materials and construction methods. Through analyzing various leather types and molding techniques, we achieved a balance between sharp edges and supple softness. Careful attention was given to the bag's dimensions, striking a balance between spaciousness to hold everyday essentials like a phone, earphones, and keys, while ensuring it seamlessly complements both daily and formal outfits, allowing for effortless incorporation into the wearer's lifestyle with style and practicality in mind. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge in designing the Leather Gem Bag was finding the right leather and technique to achieve a smooth and seamless surface while retaining the sharp edges of the gemstone-inspired shape. The most difficult part involved creating flat side surfaces using molded calf leather. Unlike organic or spherical surfaces, achieving a flat surface without wrinkles was a daunting task. To overcome this challenge, extensive testing was conducted with different depths of metal molds. The goal was to find the optimal depth that would prevent wrinkles during production, while maintaining the desired size and shape of the bag.
