| DESIGN NAME: Percent PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cat Jumping Platform INSPIRATION: Nowadays, low birth rates and high pet ownership causing a trend of fewer children and more pets. Cats are among the most popular pet especially people living in urban city with limited living space, inclusiveness among pet, owner and living space is increasingly critical and important issue. An attempt to approach the perspective of inclusive design for the three party in order to achieve a comfortable balance of living environment by satisfying the needs of all three instead of just one. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: An inclusive design between the three: cat, owner and living space. Recycled wood and metal were used as sustainable issue concern. Visually features a simple slim and lightweight structure, the platform incorporates flipping feature to reduce the bulky feeling as of normal cat platform, achieving balance interaction ratio in between pet, owner and home space. It served as an ambient and reading light for owner, a scratcher and jumping platform for cat, slim structure design to suit the space. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Switching between product usage modes by pulling, rotating, and releasing. When the shelf is at a 0-degree angle, it functions as a cat jumping platform and reading lamp, while at 90 degrees, it functions as an ambient light and cat scratch board. The reading lamp can be turned on and its light angle adjusted by touching it, while the ambient light can be turned on by touching it and its brightness can be adjusted by long pressing it. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in August 2022 and was completed in Tainan, Taiwan in March 2023. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Material: Walnut wood and stainless steel. Production techniques: Woodworking, mortise and tenon structure, lathe processing, metal welding, electroplating technology, and circuit configuration. Surface treatment: wood is treated with grinding and colored with formaldehyde-free protective paint, while metal is colored using liquid coating. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research Type: Home Co-creation - Furniture, Woodcraft, Metalworking, Art. Objectives: Design furniture that meets the needs of home atmosphere and is friendly to both owners and pets. Method: Inclusive analysis, form analysis, material usage analysis, and analysis of cat jumping platform types and sizes. Data Collection: Market research and opinion analysis for cat owners, market analysis for cat jumping platforms, market analysis for lighting fixtures. CHALLENGE: The idea using wood waste and recycled stainless steel as materials. The most challenging aspect of this product is maintaining a visually lightweight design while considering the jumping and weight-bearing capabilities of cats. After multiple tests and modifications, stainless steel and wood were combined to achieve overall stability.
