PRIMARY FUNCTION: Massage Chair
INSPIRATION: Our vision was to make the massage chair a one stop solution for home health management, like a healing angel protecting all family members. Massage chairs have unique advantages that make them perfect carriers of health management functions. First, users are relaxed while massaging, which ensures accuracy in monitoring physiological indicators. Then, the enjoyable nature of massage chairs enhances users’ adherence to the health management routine.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: iRest V8 Fuxinhao has transformed massage chairs from only tools for muscle relaxation into family health management centres. Through embedded physiological sensors and an application program (iRest Cloud), this product system facilitates health monitoring and provides personalized massage accordingly. Furthermore, it integrates novel health-related functions, including air purification and herbal fomentation.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: After users sit on the massage chair, the facial recognition system automatically loads their history settings, and the health monitoring system evaluates their fatigue level. Based on these results, the system generates a recommended massage programme. Users can choose to start directly or make some manual adjustments first. There are four interaction methods for controlling the device, including physical buttons on armrests, voice control, touch screen, and the iRest application on their smartphones.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in June 2021 and is still going on.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 1. Flexible and scalable guide rail structure: it automatically adapts to different body sizes and positions. 2. Two-core system: it controls two massage rollers separately, which enables more diversified massage techniques. 3. Facial recognition system: it eases the process of building and loading user profiles. 4. Pulse oximeter: it collects users' pulse and blood oxygen saturation data without interfering with the massage process. 5. Ionizer: it generates negative oxygen ions, which decreases harmful particles in the air. 6. Graphene heating: it generates even and highly efficient thermal radiation, which facilitates the permeation of herbs.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research team investigated users’ health concerns and expectations for home health management by organizing focus groups and co-creation workshops with potential customers of massage chairs. Product and engineer experts evaluated the technical feasibilities of the proposed healthcare functions and formulated a road map. It was decided to integrate health monitoring, air purification and herbal fomentation in the first health-centric massage chair product.
CHALLENGE: A novel feature of this product is the automatic recommendation of a massage programme based on health monitoring and user profile. Challenges For achieving this function included collecting data precisely in dark environments and developing the matching algorithm. The team redesigned the pulse oximeter and conducted numerous user tests to optimize the algorithm. In addition, many engineering challenges were overcome in designing the flexible guide rail using special tooling and advanced materials.
