DESIGN NAME: Seawool
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cape
INSPIRATION: In Taiwan, more than 160,000 tons of oysters are eaten every year, as the result, oyster shell waste has caused serious environment issue and coastal ecology. How to deal with these pollution sources has become a problem. we discovered that specially treated oyster shells can increase the functions of far-infrared negative ions, antibacterial, deodorizing, and anti-ultraviolet rays, so we make full use of the oyster shell and recycle pet bottle to developed the functional fiber of Seawool yarn.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Seawool cape weight only 300 grams, is light and easy to handle with woolen touch and washable. It is made from seawool yarn which is the combination of the nanolized oyster shell powder from discarded shells and the recycle PET bottle plastic. Not only reduces waste, but delivers performance benefits like thermal regulation, odor resistance, moisture management and quick dry, anti-static, antibacterial, no chemical antibacterial agents added which friendly to the user's skin.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Is a rectangular cape, can be use in the office, beach, sofa, bed,5 colors to match your outfit
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April,2022 published in January,2023 in Tainan, on sell in zeczec crowdfunding platform, Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Material: Recycle Oyster Shell PET/Acrylic/Rayon/Poly
Production Tech: The oyster shells are washed and dried and calcined at 100°C for 5 hours, and then ground to a thickness below 1 μm to become oyster shell powder. Then recycled PET and oyster shell powder are mixed with a secret formula and spun into yarn, which is finally spun into fabric.
Surface Touching: Wool feel

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Making used of the recycled plastic PET bottle and oyster shell to produce a special yarn for many textile application, we entitled this yarn as seawool, which was inspired by its wool-like construction and hand’s feel. The oyster was nurtured by the coast and enriched with minerals from ocean. In this way, the textiles made by discarded shells are inherent in several functions and make people have a better wearing experience. Seawool not only reduces waste, but delivers performance benefits like thermal regulation, odor resistance, moisture management and quick dry, truly sustainable materials from the ocean.
CHALLENGE: In Taiwan, the oyster farming has existed for more than 300 years. Under meticulous cultivation by farmers, oyster becomes one of the most famous delicacies in Taiwan. People can enjoy plump oyster meals from fine restaurant to even local night market. However, the Taiwanese has ignored the wastage behind, the shells. Turning waste into treasure is the most challenging issue. After years of researching and studying, we successfully find the way to strengthen the inherited gift from these discarded shells and combine with recycle PET bottles to create a brand-new functional product applied in the textile, we named it Seawool.
