DESIGN NAME: New News Branding
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Brand Identity for a K-12 News Platform
INSPIRATION: New News is not another kids show with news. It’s a news show for kids. Therefore, the design is also inspired by an illustrative, playful, and interactive approach for kids to relate to. With stickers being a key element of the brand, kids will have a more engaging experience while watching the news.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The New News is a daily, 15-minute broadcast for 8-to-12-year-olds that discusses the day’s most important (inter)national and local events, mixed with lighter yet informative news and tidbits.
It will help kids make sense of the world, so that they grow up to be well-informed, engaged and critical citizens.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: New news will publish a daily, 15-minute broadcast, as well as news articles, on its own website and app, accessible via subscription. Segments of the show will be made available on the most popular social media, like YouTube and Instagram, where kids can watch them for free.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2021 in New York and finished in January 2022 in New York

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Mainstream media is sensational and out of touch. Public trust in media is at an all-time low. Publications are folding, news deserts are expanding, media ownership is concentrating.
Kids are the most underserved demographic. Importantly, they pick up the news everywhere, but it is scattered, unclear, and frightening. Poll after poll shows that they want to learn and understand more. However, beyond a few text-based apps and sites, there is no way for them to follow the daily news.
CHALLENGE: How might we find a way to translate the heavy-text based news message into some delightful and simple design languages, so that it is not too complicated for kids under 12 to understand and stay interested?
