PRIMARY FUNCTION: Transformable Sofa
INSPIRATION: The inspiration behind this project was to create a functional and sustainable piece of furniture that provides privacy and versatility in shared living spaces. The design addresses the challenge of limited space in areas by creating a piece of furniture that could easily transform from a sofa to a bed, while also providing privacy and seclusion through the foldable back wall. The Inspiration was drawn from experiences living in shared apartments and sought to create a piece of furniture that would make these spaces more comfortable and functional.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The transformable sofa is an innovative and eco-friendly piece of furniture that provides privacy and versatility in shared living spaces. Its L-shaped support structure and foldable back wall with concealed hinges are ideal for uninterrupted work or relaxation. The sofa transforms into a bed, making it perfect for guests or napping. Its elegant design with a neutral color fits various settings and easy assembly/disassembly makes it perfect for frequent movers. Overall, it's a stylish and unique functional furniture choice.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The transformable sofa operates through a simple and intuitive process. To switch between sofa and bed mode, the user only needs to pull the bottom section of the sofa outward, and the backrest cushion piece will fold down to create a flat surface. The turntable privacy wall provides privacy and height, making it ideal for work or relaxation. The sofa also features a storage compartment underneath it and a sleeve on the lateral wall. The easy transformation and practical features allow for a comfortable and functional user experience.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project brainstorming started in 2018 and the perfect proposed design solution was prepared by 2022 in Davis, California.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The sofa frame can be crafted using FSC-certified wood, which can be cut and assembled using traditional woodworking methods. The wall was designed using 3D modeling software to ensure precision and accuracy.
Using natural latex foam as the sofa's cushioning material was a deliberate choice for its eco-friendliness and durability. The cushions were molded using traditional and modern techniques, including design considerations of vacuum molding and cutting using CNC machines.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The sofa has a width of around 1800-2200mm, a depth of 800-1000mm, and a height of 800-1000mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project aimed to explore the design of a transformable sofa for shared living spaces. Insights from the research led to the design of a sofa with a foldable back wall, made from environmentally friendly materials. CHALLENGE: The challenge of this sofa design was to balance the functionality of the sofa with aesthetic appeal while keeping sustainability in mind. The obstacle was to design a sofa that is modular and can adapt to different needs and spaces. The challenge was overcome through extensive research, brainstorming, and evaluation. Internal factors such as historical and social perspectives, and external factors such as production possibilities, information availability, and technology were considered during the process.
