DESIGN NAME: Smarteat
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smart Farming Trading App
INSPIRATION: There are quite a few people around who operate small-scale farms or practice indoor smart farming. When they have excess vegetables that they cannot handle, it can be difficult for them to find buyers who will take them for free or purchase them. As more and more individuals operate indoor farms in the future, they need an easy way to continuously manage their vegetables, and that is why they came up with the idea of Smarteat.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Smarteat is an open marketplace for smart farm vegetables that addresses supply and demand imbalances. The app allows farmers to monitor their smart farms, manage cultivation and transactions, and display real-time data. Farmers can also accept advance reservations from consumers. The app offers objective freshness checks and suggests free sharing or sale of vegetables with decreased freshness, reducing waste. Consumers can buy fresh produce with reliable information at reasonable prices.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This app allows users to connect their smart farm to their mobile device and monitor and control it in real-time. They can get information on the freshness and harvest dates of their vegetables, receive purchase reservations, and manage their vegetable growing and trading all in one place. The automation of vegetable management and trading helps farmers trade well with minimal resources, while consumers can get the freshest vegetables at a reasonable price with no distribution process. There is also the option for free sharing.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project was carried out as a personal project at the graduate school and took about 6 weeks to complete. It was finished on December 21, 2022 in Seoul.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: During the design process, the main tool used was Figma. After creating low-fidelity wireframes, the UX was continually improved by testing with prototypes. Due to time constraints, branding and design systems were prioritized and completed quickly. Then, time was spent on creating high-fidelity wireframes to save time in the UI stage.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This is an iOS/Android-based app service that uses technology to connect a smart farm's IoT to a mobile device. The app provides accurate information on the freshness of vegetables and recommends appropriate trades based on this information. It also matches farmer and customers who have compatible conditions.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I researched indoor smart farming by reading academic papers, searching online and watching YouTube videos. I conducted surveys and interviewed people with experience in smart farming to validate my hypotheses and gather insights. These insights helped me identify key features and set the main direction for the app.
CHALLENGE: While developing the solution, I not only focused on solving the current problem, but also looked for a solution that could be sustainable in the future. As a result, the process of researching and discovering insights and deriving key features took more time. Even after establishing the service structure, I continued to consider and think about whether the direction was correct, and repeatedly revised the prototype. In the end, it seems that the result has improved from the beginning.
