DESIGN NAME: Traveling in Virtual Space
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Textbook
INSPIRATION: Easy access to an unapproachable textbook was given by meshing various things that could only be gained from the experience into the study materials and also three dimensional understanding of the study materials was enabled by widening the boundaries of what students can imagine with three dimensional vividness through a newly developed AR system
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is the cover design for elementary school textbooks which enables experience based learning through the indirect travel in the space of the cover. The illustration was expressed from the front side of the cover to the rear side of it to provide the concept of space. It also made it possible for the students to think and imagine three dimensionally by enabling them to experience the virtual space with the usage of the AR that can be activated on the app.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Study contents for each subject can be naturally experienced through traveling. It was designed for the students to learn the study contents naturally by traveling the space on the cover page, not the flat cover page, with keywords of joy, imagine, adventure with the familiar characters. By enabling the aggressive interactive communication in the virtual space between the users and the book with the AR system that reacts upon touches and speaks on the things in the background.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was planned and produced from November 2021 to 2022 and it is projected to be used as a textbook for the 5th and 6th grades from the first semester of 2023

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The cover was made with 3D feel to it which allows 3D-like thinking and imagination with abundance by enabling the students experience AR along with the application of various post process technologies such as the use of color foil, silk epoxy, etc. It was designed with the implementation of marker technology to automatically get the AR mode on when the picture of the cover image is taken after downloading the AR app - MiraeN’s textbook travel

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A lot of thoughts were carefully put into the design to have it play a role to increase the expectation and curiosity level about the study contents in non-governmental organization’s textbook. The story of traveling and characters in the daily life were chosen to be used as a bridge between the students and the textbook to connect them. Also, the range of thinking was widened with the enabled AR experience which allows the students to think beyond just the printing.
CHALLENGE: Search for visual images (characters) and concept that could match students’ interest as a non-governmental organization’s textbook for elementary school was conducted and the stories related to the study contents were sought after for the increased curiosity and aggressive participation in studying. It was made possible for a new experience by creating the virtual space with the application of AR through the new technologies and trend search.
