PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fountain Pen
INSPIRATION: Human civilization is inherited through writing, and fountain pens are the king of writing tools. In today's era of digitalization and plasticization, the art of writing shows a precious and noble taste in classic fountain pen. Inspired by the balance, symmetry, towering and huge, and line sense of the architectural aesthetic structure system from the world-renowned landmark - 30 St Mary Ax, London, England, to create an elegance and warmth writing tool with artistic value.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Using architectural structure elements designed an integrated form of the mesh-shaped pen body, made by additive manufacturing technology in 316 medical grade stainless steel material, it perfectly supports the elegant pen body and is rigid without support materials. Saves post-processing process, less material consumption, least cost and time of production, customization and small-scale production, giving the pen lightweight, handy, exquisite, and neat features with unique value and significance.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In human history, architecture has been a symbol of the progress and development of human civilization; and the pen on the man’s pocket neckline is a symbol of personal identity. In the rapid development of informatic age, when most of the people are get use to the digital gadgets, the art of writing shows a precious taste. This fountain pen served as the legacy in the digital era, and is of great significance to anyone when receive as special gift.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project research started in January 2021 in Tainan University of Technology, the very first prototype was exhibited in Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store in March 2021, later was redesigned and marketing planning by designer team lead by prof.Chen in acdesign associates International Co.,Ltd in July 2021, the final product was launched and succeed in zec-zec crowdfunding platform in November 2021.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Type of research: New norm in manufacturing process for fountain pen in structure and materials.
Research Objectives: Least material use and manufacturing process, reducing waste generation and post-processing waste by adapting metal 3D printing technology.
Methodology: Hand writing ergonomic analysis, metal 3D printing modeling, convert architectural structure into modeling requirement.
Data Collection: market research of usage scenario, Target user and writing behavior study, Pesona, Customer Journey.
Research tools: Solid Works, Rhino, Keyshot.
Impact: Sustainability wise in fountain pen industry.
Result: Create the ordinary pen extraordinary.
CHALLENGE: Apply the additive technology or 3D printing in stainless steel material to realize this project itself is already a challenge. The 3D modelling mode is quite different from others in PLA or ABS, every line and shape built have to be above 45 degree, the least support generate the better in final product, it takes least post-processing waste especially made in 316L medical grade stainless steel. we succeed in making this metal pen without any support, zero production waste.
