DESIGN NAME: Motiva
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Philosophical Art
INSPIRATION: Motiva's founder, Ronen Shilo, has always had a deep love for quotes and an appreciation to great minds that led to his fascination with presenting quotes in a meaningful way - optimized to fit as many as possible in a limited space. As a hi-tech veteran and software engineer at heart, it was no surprise that he defined it as a technological problem that needed a resolution. So what started as a tedious manual process, turned into the Motiva algorithm that creates an efficiently packed grid with numerous quotes within. The Motiva concept was born and its first manifestation as wall art was soon underway.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The fusion of words with art, empowered by technology, brings philosophical art to your wall as Motiva. In a process called visual compression, Motiva’s proprietary algorithm identifies common words within a set of quotes and overlaps them in a way that creates a unique letter grid. This unique grid is matched with striking artwork, printed on fine paper, and harnessed in a wooden frame. Words hidden within the grid illuminate to form meaningful statements to inspire and surprise the viewer.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Motiva has a minimalistic, quiet, and unassuming air to it despite its technological depth. Hanging on the wall, free from any visible hi-tech traits, it is as easy to hang as any other wall art. After unboxing the Motiva, the user will find a power supply, a special wall mount, as well as a Motiva User Manual with clear instructions and simple diagrams. Once Motiva is hanging on the wall, the viewer can switch the ON button and begin to enjoy the experience. Using the letter grid, Motiva will signal to the viewer its status - whether it’s on, charging, or needs to be charged. When the battery of Motiva runs low, it will indicate the need for charging by flashing the word MOTIVA in the bottom right corner. To recharge, users simply connect Motiva to a power source using the provided USB-C cable. During charging, Motiva will not display any quotes to maintain its traditional art appearance, as it is designed to hang cord-free on the wall. The motion sensors detect the ambient traffic in the room and begin to display quotes in a random sequence at varying times, to always maintain the element of surprise. And conversely, when the room is empty, Motiva will not display any quotes saving energy for future use. Motiva ingeniously combines technology and design to bring a new level of immersion to art.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The ideation of the Motiva concept began in 2018. In 2022, after 4 years of research and development, Motiva was softly launched in Design London, and in 2023 officially began online sales and international shipping.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Motiva is printed on Bockingford Inkjet Fine Art Paper that has specialized UV screening archival ink and is protected by a layer of art-grade varnish, all of which have contributed to the paper's imperative translucent qualities. Motiva’s print accuracy requirements exceed basic industry standards, allowing a deviation of a maximum of 0.1 mm. This ensures the most clear-cut display of each illuminated letter within the 576 LED bulb tray. The 50 mm frame is cut from sustainably procured oak wood, spray painted with Jet Black double-coated paint, and then hand-polished. Motiva has inbuilt light and motion sensors that are concealed in its body. The motion sensor detects movement in Motiva's surroundings, activating its display only when someone is around to enjoy it. As the light sensor detects the light around the Motiva, it continually adjusts its luminosity and thus, reducing power consumption. Motiva is cordless and relies on a powerful and long-lasting battery for energy supply.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The ability to resonate with, and connect to, people these days is more challenging than ever. The influx of information coming in various mediums, simultaneously, excessively and with little filtration has become a pervasive problem for many. Important ideas, thought provoking messages and authentic expressions are struggling to rise above noise level to reach the individual in a significant way. Artists and thought leaders have found Motiva to be a vehicle for expression in a unique and meaningful way, that is both quiet as it is loud, surprising as it is lasting. In a world saturated with messages and fighting over people’s attention, Motiva creates a new space, a new pace, and a new way to inspire, evolve and grow.
CHALLENGE: The overarching challenge in the design of Motiva was to preserve a look of traditional art while integrating it with powerful technology. This paradoxical state lies at the heart of Motiva and is credited with contributing to its surprising and compelling visual experience. In collaboration with Pentagram on the initial design, we decided to create Motiva using physical elements. Our first challenge was in selecting the right type of art paper that would have the necessary qualities to be just translucent enough to let light illuminate through while being able to account for the ambient light in the room in order to yield an optimal viewing experience. After months of testing various papers from around the world, Bockingford Inkjet fine-art paper was selected.
The second challenge was ensuring that only specific letters will illuminate precisely at any given point and no light will bleed to the sides. To resolve this issue, we developed an additional laser-cut Perspex print layer that is manually matched to the artwork with an accuracy of 0.1 mm deviation, well above the print industry standard.
Thirdly, Motiva’s algorithm, which takes a set of quotes and packs them into a unique letter grid, had to be elegantly merged with the artwork in such a way that it did not take away from the image yet allows for the quotes to be highly readable. That delicate balance was achieved as a result of the proprietary font we developed as well as small but significant adjustments of the color scheme, opacity and general light luminosity in the LED lights.
Another major effort was invested in concealing the various technological components that make up Motiva in order to uphold the look of traditional art and a minimalist design. The long-lasting battery, 576 LED bulbs, computer processor, and electronic framework have all been elegantly concealed leaving the viewer with a harmoniously blended multi-faceted composition, harnessed in a minimal oak wood frame that hangs seamlessly on the wall.
