DESIGN NAME: Weaving
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interactable Silk Scarf
INSPIRATION: In the 20th century, women fully exercised their wisdom in using silk scarves. It became a great companion in their social lives and workplace. The real formation of the modern silk scarf was in the 1920s, when the traditional use of long shawls and headscarves was gradually out of fashion, and the techniques of folding and knotting of neck scarves were slowly paid attention to. 100 years have passed, though the silk scarf has been a very important component in the fashion industry, design innovation seems to be forgotten except for merely patterns.
China is the largest silk producer with a history of more than a thousand years. The craft of silk production has spread widely, evolving a variety of delicately intangible cultural heritage skills, of which the core is about the different interpretations of the warp and weft weaving method. The wisdom of the warp and weft weaving method should be able to be presented in the form and usage of silk scarf products, providing consumers with a brand new silk scarf product in the late 100 years, and it allows traditional Chinese culture to breathe a new life and shows vitality into silk scarf products.
Further, it is observed that another traditional wisdom in the world (Huarongdao Klotski) presents different permutations and combinations by moving the slider, which is conducive to solving the drawback brought by static graphics as it will lead to aesthetic fatigue.
Under the situation that silk scarf has fallen into innovation stagnation, the original purpose and inspiration of this design is to promote the innovative development of silk scarf, rekindle users' interest and concern for silk scarf products in the context of digital economy, and also to better let users experience the traditional wisdom and culture, bringing greater value to silk scarf products.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: WEAVING break the shackles of the traditional two-dimensional space, making silk scarfs three-dimensional. By creating a warp and weft weave, the two tapes are crossed across the body of the scarf, giving it a new form of expression. In the process of using it, users can change the pattern of the silk scarf by twitching the drawstring, forming up to 16 different visual effects of arrangement and combination. This not only allows users to experience a new way of using silk scarves, but also makes them less likely to get tired of a "fixed" silk scarf.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 1 Unfold the silk scarf
2 Draw the tapes in any of the four directions based upon preferences to form different arrangements
3 Pick your favorite combination of arrangements and put on
4 Have a bright mood, bingo!
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2021 in Tongxiang,CHINA and finished in December 2022 in Tongxiang,CHINA

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Digital printing is printing with digital technology. Digital printing technology is a high-tech product that integrates mechanical and computer electronic information technology with the continuous development of computer technology. With the increasingly diversified needs of customers, the traditional grey cloth printing has gradually developed from mass production to small batch and multi-variety personalization. The digital printing scarf not only has high quality and good output effect, but also can meet the needs of customers for small batch and personalized printing. Digital printing technology meets the increasingly diversified market demand with its advantages of high efficiency, low cost, good printing effect and less pollution, which brings an unprecedented development opportunity for textile printing and dyeing.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 1000mm *1000mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Through researching traditional craftsmanship and traditional culture, a large amount of documentary material is compiled to select appropriate innovative methods for silk scarves and modernize their expression by using Chinese-style techniques in order to complete the design practice. Meanwhile, appropriate pattern contents are selected to form a seamless integration under various combinations. In this way, the user's attention to traditional craftsmanship and traditional culture is ignited and innovative development of silk scarf products is formed.
CHALLENGE: In this design process, the biggest adjustment is to make the warp and weft weaving method through structural exposure, so that users can immerse into the experience, and at the same time the problem relating to pattern cohesion will be solved.
