| DESIGN NAME: Greenery PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bench INSPIRATION: With the impact of Covid, the fragile connection between us and nature suffered another critical hit. The designer thinks it’s important to adapt the biophilic design into furniture making as well. Inspired by the scenic atmosphere of Eastern tea culture, the designer wanted to bring its tranquility with a furniture piece. The design comes from ancient Chinese architecture, it looks like part of an old garden pavilion, yet the minimal silhouette and metal planter provided it with contemporary characteristics. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Greenery Bench is a furniture piece designed to integrate with different plants, its concept originated from the eastern tea culture, with a hint of the ancient Chinese garden where you can see wood pavilion surrounded by water and greenery. The initial idea of designing this piece is to create an organic combination of furniture and plants in response to our innate tendency to seek a connection to nature, thus the design of the bench makes it can be placed in both residential space and public space. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The product primarily serves as a normal bench with seating and extra space for item placement. It is designed ideally for 2 and 3 persons at most. The user can switch the types of plants according to their personal taste and even place the faux plants inside the metal planter. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Shenzhen in April of 2022 and was completed in Shenzhen in June of 2022. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Greenery Bench uses the environment-friendly wood board as its structure material. With wood veneer as its outer material. The planter on the side is made of stainless steel, and leather seat cushions with polyurethane foam inside. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 1600 mm x Depth 440 mm x Height 430 mm TAGS: Post-pandemic, Bench, Greenery, Relaxation, Multi-scene, Furniture, Well-being RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Many studies have shown that most of us spend 90% of our time indoors, but human have a strong affinity towards nature, a environment devoid of nature would create a mismatch with the potential threat to health and quality of life. It is clear that people who live or work in space with more natural element has significantly lower anxiety level and higher productivity, thus making furniture that integrates plant would help create a more comfortable space for our target audiences. CHALLENGE: One of the main challenges in the design process was making a truthful and natural combination of Furniture and Plants, this is why the design team looked into tea culture as it has a vivid symbolic identity that immediately brings people to somewhere tranquil and full of nature, where time slows down and nobody is in a hurry. By merging such image into the design, the combination of the plant and the bench seems logical and understandable, thus making the Greenery Bench not only provide a physical space for people to sit and enjoy their time, but also a spiritual garden that bends time where the present is the most important thing in life.
