DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
1 BAN

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Fashion Jewelry

INSPIRATION:
Based on a lot of research and communication with the target group, we conducted the design from two perspectives: visual element and deep concept. We’ve designed five jewelries based on the stories as follows: the tears shed by Lilith, the arrow in Saint Sebastian, the statue of Venus of Willendorf, the dolphin implying Venus in ancient Rome and Aphrodite's rebellion against Zeus in Greek mythology.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
"A woman in a masculine suit will be regarded as a fashion while a man wearing a slip dress will be shrugged off as a freak." Based on the aforesaid inspiration, we created a set of fashion jewelry specially for men who imprison their characters and expressions to drain out their emotions and convey their attitudes with this set of jewelry as the medium. In terms of the detailed design, many elements with symbolic qualities are selected to express the feminine beauty under a rigid and direct external appearance. Meanwhile, the materials such as silver and Padparadscha are adopted for the mass-produced jewelry with color matching in a more feminine manner.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
People can better express themselves in modern society, so we hope we can create a new choice for jewelry in the inclusive society. The expression of individual attitude is just the core of design for our jewelry.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project began in January 2022 at UAL CSM in London. In April 2022, the electronic model was made in London. It will be processed and produced in London and Beijing in June 2022. On a modeling shoot in Beijing in September 2022.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This is the group of jewelry designs specially for a minority of men with no gender identity.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
20mm x 20mm x 8mm

TAGS:
Fashion, Identity of gender, Speculative design

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
From the perspective of the most intuitive vision, we hope to present a combination of masculine rigidity and softness. That’s to say, the structure of our design is featured with rigidness, but the combination of gemstones and metal colors reveals the feminine characteristics as well. In terms of the profound conceptual elements of the design, the stories behind Lilith and Saint Sebastian express the resistance to the concepts imposed on our society. The images of Venus of Willendorf and dolphins show that people should have diverse awareness of beauty. Aphrodite's resistance to Zeus in Greek mythology expresses the unacceptable catharsis of niche sense of beauty.

CHALLENGE:
This is a relatively new trial of mass-produced jewelry. It’s a very big challenge how to keep balance among the new audience and design suitable jewelries for them.
