DESIGN NAME: Lagoon Butterfly
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pattern
INSPIRATION: Lagoon butterfly is the manifestation of a family’s resolve, discovery and longing for the tropical paradise they once called home during the global pandemic of 2020. This pattern is created to commemorate the
nature that inspired them and the historical event we all faced in humanity. In this design, we want to capture the beauty of the lagoons scattered in the South Pacific Ocean. Inspired by the ever changing colours of Maui Bay, Fiji, this original hand-painted pattern interprets the mesmerising beauty of tropical lagoons into an imaginative dance of hundreds of butterflies, flapping wings of ocean waves. The pattern conveys a feeling of romance, beauty and hope, transporting viewers to the far flung paradise of Fiji.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Using a century old art form involving floating paint on water, lagoon butterfly showcases intricate colours created by corals beneath the lagoon which form an array of turquoise and emerald waterways. This pattern is especially designed for the usage of IVAU baby wrap and matching apparel. The bespoke and smart pattern placement enables baby wrap user to embrace a baby in the wings of a large lagoon butterfly while the matching dress has a beautiful cascade of butterflies from small to big. By strategically design the pattern according to most efficient garment production, one pattern was able to create four different looking garment styles without the need for position print.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The pattern repeat title of 3x1.5 meters is especially created for four garments. Placement of elements in this repeat tile takes into consideration the usage on final products, so the fabric can be used with minimal wastage to create four different garments. 1. Baby wrap where the large lagoon butterfly is right in the centre to wrap around a baby. 2. Butterflies form a cascade from small to big on a dress. 3. Baby romper made entirely of small butterflies using the excess fabric after producing the first two garments. 4. Women's loungewear set are made by random cutting to maximize fabric usage. With the abstract design, the loungewear set looks good in all cutting outcomes. So with one seamless repeat pattern, we can create four unique looking garment styles.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design project started in Dec 2021 and finished Jul 2022 in Maui Bay, Fiji and Hong Kong

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The butterfly wings are painted using fluid art technique to showcase the fluidity and intricacy of the colours of a coral reef. Combined with aerial image of the silver lining, where big ocean waves crash onto the barrier reef, each butterfly signifies an ocean lagoon in the vast South Pacific Ocean. Hundreds of butterflies big and small are hand placed on a pattern title of 3x1.5 meters taking into consideration of the usage on final products, so the fabric can be used with minimal wastage to create four different garments.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Pattern repeat tile of 3x1.5meter

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The pattern is inspired by the ever-changing colours of Maui Bay, Fiji, a protected marine reserve. We wanted to show case the view of lagoon meets deep ocean at a silver lining (the crushing waves) in a creative way. We studies many aerial photos of Maui Bay and ocean lagoons to finally come up with the inspiration to turn the lagoon into a butterfly and make hundreds of butterflies to signify the scattered lagoons in the South Pacific.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part is to jump outside of the ordinary view. When we look at the lagoon from land level, you see three linear colours (the lagoon, the silver lining and the ocean). However, to change the perspective to an aerial view and elevate the lagoon to a shape of a romantic butterfly took months of brainstorming and drawing.
