DESIGN NAME: Beval
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Air Purifier
INSPIRATION: There has always been a myth that size equals cleaning efficiency in purifiers - a larger device is more effective. However, it causes difficulties in moving, cleaning the floor and limits the possibility of sharing a device among multiple rooms, especially among women. Regular replacement of expensive filters is also a common pain point. To address these pain points, the design team reduced the size while maintaining high airflow and efficiency, reduced the cost and increased the filter life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Beval is the smallest among the products with the exact specification. It has an added feature to filter another type of air pollution ozone, often overlooked in everyday life and filters viruses 12 times faster. AI is applied in the filter to calculate the consumption to determine the replacement schedule instead of a simple time countdown that may result in replacing a filter that may not be dirty. Lastly, the device assembly and disassembly are designed to be foolproof and intuitive.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The product has the necessary and minimal buttons to guide the user to operate the machine easily, including power, fan speed, and intensity; the information displayed on the panel corresponds directly to the air indicator in color and shows the worst pollution indicator level. The indicator light lights up in red when the filter needs to be replaced. The design team expects to minimize the learning threshold in human-computer interaction, allowing users to operate the machine more intuitively.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in October 2021 and will be finished in November 2022 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The AI function monitors the filter consumption to calculate the filter life more realistically and save power. The four different air sensors detect air indicators, including ozone, PM2.5, and PM1.0, volatile organic compounds. The filter element filters dust and suppresses bacteria and viruses simultaneously. The three built-in UVC sterilization lights purify the air again. The light sensor turns off the panel display automatically when it is dark to provide a good sleeping environment.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To find out the user pain points, the design team sent a questionnaire to survey user opinions to understand the actual situation, human-computer interaction, and user needs. The device was put into field tests at each stage of development. Through observation and interviews, the design team repeatedly confirmed the user's ease of use and satisfaction. Through agile development, the design team avoids subjective thinking and allows the products to be as close to the user's needs as possible.
CHALLENGE: Considering the situation in a small space, the first challenge was to reduce the number of parts and save space as much as possible within the size limitation of the critical components while keeping the strong filtration effect. Maintaining a simple and intuitive human-machine interface is also a goal for the design team. The strategy of most home appliances is the more features you have, the more value you get, but this can undermine the product’s overall performance and confuse the user.
