DESIGN NAME: Easysulin
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Insulin Pen
INSPIRATION: According to the statistics, there are totally 1.1 million sufferers worldwide under the age of 20 with type 1 diabetes, including children and adolescents. None of the insulin injection products on the market have the function of positioning and remembering the injection location. Patients can only inject according to their own memory, which is quite unfriendly to the children without the relevant design assisted injection, and may easily cause health and safety problems.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Easysulin is an insulin injection pen specifically designed for children, which can effectively solve the health problems caused by repetitive injections of insulin at the same site. According to the injection time, turn the morning, noon, or evening icons upward, and then pull out the tape measure corresponding to the number of weeks after placing the hole of the tape measure at the umbilicus and start to inject.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: First, put the cartridge inside the Easysulin pen. Second, rotate the knob to adjust the required dose each using. Third, rotate the whole pen to put the corresponds time icon on the body of the pen upward. (That means the user can directly see the icon in first person view when ducking head) Finally, place the hole of the tape measure at the umbilicus. Pull out the tape measure corresponding to the number of weeks and inject.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The product development and design started in March 2022, and finished product testing in January 2023 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The triangular pen body divides the morning, noon and evening injection angles into 120 degrees on average. The user can intuitively point the current time icon upwards, position the tape measure on the umbilicus and pull it out to the icon of the week day, which can achieve the stable distance interval both horizontally and vertically.
With the matching of the tape measure scale and the triangle shape, the injection positions can be distributed in the abdomen in sequence, and each injection point is more than 1 cm apart and 2.5 cm away from the umbilicus.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Easysulin is suitable for Insulin cartridge on the market. You can directly put the cartridge into it, adjust the dose from the end and inject it. After the injection, take out the cartridge for next use. Its dimensions are 3cm*2.5cm*15cm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our design team research the different types of products on the market and found that there are a very large number of products used by patients, but only a few types are widely circulated, which depends on the use value and price of the product. Then our team started asking those with diabetes, simulating the patient's movements and mood during injection, hoping to think about different solutions from their standpoint.
Besides, we had an interview with $$ Hospital registered Nurse- Ms. LIN. The conclusion of the issue is: Patients sometimes forget to record it, also it is not so convenient. She recommend: Design a safer and more convenient way is the most important goal. Because for those young patients, it is not so easy to follow our procedures every time.
CHALLENGE: Our design team's original concept was to design an insulin injection pen for children, making it more convenient and easy for children with diabetes to inject insulin. At the same time as our research, we discovered a problem with repeated site injection of insulin. If insulin is injected into the same site all the times, it may form adipose tissue thickening, and adipose hyperplasia or fat depression atrophy, which may lead to body's poor effectiveness of insulin absorption, making blood sugar more difficult to control. So we decided to design a better feature to solve this problem. In the end, we chose the combination of a tape measure and a spirit level to complete this function, and designed the appearance to be more suitable for children to operate.
