DESIGN NAME: The Tree
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Office
INSPIRATION: The design is inspired by the local beauty of the natural environment and the banyan tree settlement within site. The proposal hopes to break the impression of the closed, ultra-high density and floor area ratio of the previous inherent landmark skyscraper and deeply integrate landscape and architecture. Architecture can also be the city's natural landscape, like a banyan tree growing, showing the change of the city's four seasons and the passage of time, which is another interpretation of the definition of landmark architecture.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: After analyzing the actual demand for the city's urban development and the sight height of the surrounding landscape, the scheme breaks the original design requirement of 200m height and controls the overall height within 100m. At the same time, the uncertainty of investment and use function demands a new concept for the buildings, particularly skyscrapers, which rely heavily on investment: flexibility. Offices must be easily transformable into other functions, and vice versa; Small spaces must be able to be transformed into bigger ones, and vice versa. How can it be done?
By creating a tower that is a simple grid structure with a minimum pixel size, any spatial configuration can be imagined and filled in. The grid size is 8.4 x 8.4 m which combines size requirements for parking with those for a small retail unit or office type. There are 6 space size types stacked up and rotating upward, creating many outdoor gardens simultaneously.
The bottom of the building is raised 15m above the ground. As a result, only four cores are supported on the ground. It frees up nearly 23,000 square meters of urban park space. The ground landscape covers commercial functions, naturally forming a park with ups and downs where citizens can rest and play freely.
The project aims to create a landmark building with a public space that integrates nature and artificial, grows, interacts, is full of imagination, and reflects the change of the seasons.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The preliminary research is divided into two directions: 1. According to the economic and investment situation disclosed by the local tax in recent years, the construction amount of the building in the assignment book is reassessed, and the flexible leasing demands of the space. 2. Obtain the characteristics of the target site by studying the local culture, natural features and other information.
When the design theme of 'The Tree' was determined, it was also divided into two closely related design directions: architectural space design and structural design. In particular, structural design needs to be innovative and implementable. In the process, a large number of schemes were compared and selected, and the bidirectional cantilevered space truss structure was finally adopted as the implementation scheme.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This design competition started in August 2022 and lasted for a month in Jiang Shan City.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The building consists of 4 towers. Four core tubes, in pairs, form a cross-shaped cantilever structure. Architectural space boxes are scattered with patterns hanging from the core.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 100-meter high-rise building

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The demand for a new tower in Jiang Shan, one of the fastest-growing cities in China, raises the issue of what kind of tower should be added to the skyline of the city axis. Should it be a sphere, a spire, or a cube? And is it only form that count? Can we imagine a tower that is more than merely form-driven? What content can be given to such a tower? Can it be critical and improve the commercial and hollow architectural icon of the previous decade?
We first raised the above questions and then analyzed the local economic development prediction, building function use demand, site natural landscape, urban natural landscape and skyline form. Finally, the solution creatively dissolves the height of the 200-meter tower, controls it within 100 meters, and integrates the architecture with the landscape to respond to the local landmark building.
