DESIGN NAME: Concord
PRIMARY FUNCTION: School Home Economics Room
INSPIRATION: The whole space is structured by an oval. Students learn in this oval room and build up relationship. This design also provides a safe feeling for students. Lake blue curved ceiling increase the feeling of peacefulness. Outside the oval, recessed downlight surrounded everyone to provide warm spacing. We choose white, wood and lake blue as the main color in order to let students feel warm and comfortable while learning.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We believe every student have different potential. Students have various background and ability, there are unlimited possibility inside them. The Home Economics Room is expected to create a safe, inclusive and affiliated atmosphere. The designer choose an oval design that symbolize inclusion and togetherness. Students can use this room to cooperate and complement each other.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In terms of planning the space, we divided different areas according to the oval. In the middle of the oval is the learning area. There are different areas outside the oval : the laundry area ,the baking area and the preparation area. The cafe area has professional level coffee machines for students to brew coffee and practice their latte art skills for their professional development. In addition, the designer hide a desk with power socket for the sewing class. The floor tile consists of light grey, dark grey and wood grain ovals to divide different areas. It corresponds the ceiling to increase the interest of space.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in Feb 2022 in Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Tai Po Secondary School.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The one-way communication between teacher and students are not effective and decrease the interest in students to learn. School is not a factory; education should be student based to find out the potential from everyone. The newly designed Home Economics room can increase the efficiency of teaching and learning between teacher and students, as well as looking after individual difference. In the learning process, students develop interpersonal relationship, life skills that prepare them to blend into a harmonious society.
CHALLENGE: The Hong Kong education system is designed to be more quantitative in decades. School environment is uncharacterized and lacks attention to students needs. We think that every space should be user friendly and unique. The designer hope to activates a new learning experience for the students through the oval structure of Home Management room. Through better learning environment, students can learn different skills, build up confidence and develop correct values.
