DESIGN NAME: Cooler Master Motion 1
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Haptic Gaming Chair
INSPIRATION: With technological developments in meta, gaming and entertainment, Motion 1 bridges the gap between the digital space and the physical world, delivering true immersion through its unique setup.
By combining a fully functional desk chair with D-Boxs Haptic Engine, Motion 1 promises an experience of continuous benefit to the user, both on the work and play side of the spectrum.
Motion 1 embodies the idea of a new generation of chairs that can revolutionize the work and play experience.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Motion 1s striking silhouette defines its identity within a heavily style-oriented market. Inspired by the hammerhead shark, Motion 1 fuses apex-predator looks with a natural elegance and makes for a unique form factor, recognizable front and back.
Whilst the stylistic choices of the chair were made with a strong philosophy, the whole of the chair, from its cocoon-inspired chaise design to the enlarged head section serves to enhance support during the chairs haptic performance.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The haptic function is at the cutting edge of immersive technology and immerses users in games and movies based on their sound signature and therefore offers users a unique experience for every game.
Within the capability of providing movement, textures and vibrations, Motion 1 is pursuing additional functions to improve work-centric well-being such as seat notifications after long periods, sleeping aids, relaxation and smartphone integrations through its MasterPlus software suite.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project kicked off in March 2021 and is to be completed by March 2023.
The Chair Design and Engineering is being developed and completed in Bangkok, Thailand with Engineering for the D-Box integration developed in Montreal, Canada and the overall Project Oversight and Management is in Taipei, Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Sit. Move. Feel.
Motion 1 was defined by the idea that the haptic function, however innovative, should not compromise any expectations of a well-designed chair, most importantly its ergonomics, function and comfort.
The team worked extensively on the D-Box seat integration to deliver a completely natural extension to the user experience, intuitive and simple to use. And because of this natural haptic edge that Motion 1 provides, the future of setups can take on a whole new meaning. From health-centred features to entertainment immersion options, Motion 1 has the power to break the limits of desk chairs forever.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: W715 x D765 x H1230 cm
The D-BOX in the Motion 1 is the smallest Haptic Engine developed by D-Box to date. It uses a single actuator in an innovative mechanical arrangement to deliver tilting and jolting movements, textures and vibrations to the Motion 1 Seat.
All moving parts are made from metal to ensure years of durable and reliable performance. A special connector eases the removal of the seat, easing repairs to the D-Box for or seat replacement to sustainably extend its life.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: D-Box undertook a research study with 20 participants to understand how their High-Fidelity Vibro-Kinetic experience would affect the level of immersion or the sense of presence during gameplay or movie watching.
The research showed that the level of enjoyment and intensity of emotions increased significantly when the Haptic technology was turned on compared to participants that experienced the same game or movie without.
CHALLENGE: D-Box research indicated a strong sense of immersion with chair movements when playing games or watching movies. However, from a Design perspective, we were concerned that most haptic products to date, be it haptic gloves, gamepads or racing simulators only exist in their own realm of play. For Motion 1 it was paramount to look for ways of how a product could live outside the world of gaming and also have a purpose in normal life and work.
