DESIGN NAME: Rock Fire Praise
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Catering Space
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the petroglyphs of human ancestors making a fire and roasting meat painted 12,000 years ago in the Altamira caves, Iberian Peninsula, the designer integrates the primordial concept of carnivorous justice with the Japanese culinary pursuit of the original beauty of food ingredients by consciously creating a dining area that simulates the cavern and furnace, thereby offering customers a place that will arouse their appetite.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is a Japanese barbecue restaurant themed with Rock Fire Praise. It uses a color scheme of red and black to symbolize rock and fire, creating a tranquil yet eruptive style. The interaction between the two contrasting colors brings a strong visual impact which, coupled with Japanese style soft furnishings conveys the brand philosophy of carnivorous justice and induces customers primal desire for meat.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The designer brings a variable psychological experience through scene simulation. The decorations of Japanese style ink writing and samurai swords evoke emotional responses from customers and awaken their vision for justice.
Lighting on the second floor which is designed to simulate natural light and soft furnishings made from organic materials help bring peace. The Knife of Justice placed at the fringe of the sight symbolizes the defence of justice and provides a peaceful dining place.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design of the project began in May 2020. In October 2020, the project opened for business in Shang Hai Sunshine Garden apartment complex in Longhu District, Shantou, Guangdong Province, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The project uses rough surfaced fumed oak and unevenly porous volcanic rock as the main materials, which add a sense of historical richness and authenticity due to the natural texture and defects of materials.
The second floor uses bamboo fences, wooden hedges and Japanese shoji doors to arrange and divide the space with a wabi sabi style, which, combined with the textured, organic soft furnishings adds more historical richness and authenticity while neutralizing the sternness of the first floor.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project is suited in Shang Hai Sunshine Garden in Long Hu District, Shantou, Guangdong Province. Compared with other restaurants, it has fewer customers due the local consumption level and its business positioning as a Japanese barbecue restaurant. Thus the designer tries to bring consumers a multi sensory experience and evoke the association of justice to create a good brand image and reputation, thereby increasing consumer stickiness and affection to make up for the low customer flow.
CHALLENGE: The design obstacle is the conflict between the brand concept carnivorous justice and modern healthy diet which may cause rejection from consumers. So the project aims to arouse customer interest through scene simulation and inspire their design for meat and reflection of justice through the sense of historical richness. The authentic texture of materials and furnishings shows the pursuit of the original beauty of ingredients, evokes a sense of justice, and guides consumers to enjoy food.
