DESIGN NAME: Rest of Life
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential
INSPIRATION: Inspired by Taiwanese traditional houses, the design team seeks out building materials from the 1960s and 1970s, using the two main themes of "retro" and "memory" to inject modern craftsmanship and innovative design to transform vintage building materials. In particular, the design team has recreated the atmosphere of an old-time family through the interplay of different materials and details on the cabinet. In this project, the design team finds the feeling of home in the timeline of retro and modern.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Layout: The original house had a large beam at the entrance and living room, which blocked the view. The design team made a begonia sliding door in the entrance to make the space separate. The visual weight of the beam can be weakened. Finishing: One of the common features of old furniture from the early years is its refinement. Such as the rounded ceiling, the beveled junction of the terrazzo wall, and the vintage shape of the cabinetry with the serpentine roller shutter. Materials: Terrazzo, vintage furniture, and begonia glass are used to create a retro look.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As a vintage house, the design team focused on the presentation of the cabinetry and the selection of materials for this project. In addition to using classic materials such as rattan mesh, begonia, terrazzo, and dark wood veneer, the design team also used modern artisanal techniques to create a sense of refinement. In addition, the design team added a rounded design vocabulary to the large volume and used chamfering and other details at the junctions. At the same time, the folding door not only divides the field but also does not block the light.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2021 and finished in January 2022 in Tanzi District, Taichung City.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design team has advanced on the client's vintage requirements by not having a closed layout, planning open boxes, and using smoked oak to surround the entire space. In addition, the design team has made great efforts in the cabinet design, with details such as rattan mesh, serpentine roller shutter, begonia glass, antique brass handle, and door junction. These materials and designs are the ones that the design team recalled seeing in the homes of their elders when they were children. The design team has taken the traditional aesthetic elements of Taiwan and integrated them into the space.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This project is a new house of 66.1 square meters on the 15th floor, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a tatami room. The open design makes the whole space more spacious and brighter. The large area, such as the wall behind the sofa, is divided by a 7-3 ratio of white wall and terrazzo, which makes the longitudinal vision of the small house taller and slenderer. On the other hand, the horizontal axis is visually elongated due to the open plan, the round window design on the wall, and the removal of the partition wall.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: With a retro style, creates wonderful memories for the clients. Unlike the simple style of general system cabinets, the design team designed each cabinet as a separate movable cabinet because these cabinets are the details of life that cannot be ignored. Furthermore, a lamp symbolizing the clients love is left at the entrance to bring back memories and vintage beauty to life. The outside world is in a whirlwind, but here, the only thing that makes the small house comfortable is the fragrance of wood, rice, and the beautiful face of the lover.
CHALLENGE: One is the existence of large beams has an obvious sense of abruptness. The design team used the installation of a begonia glass sliding door and the design of a circular-shaped ceiling to weaken the volume. Besides, the curved elements are used in the cabinet of the entrance hall, echoing the rounded design of the ceiling, so that the presence of large beams is reduced. Another is the retro sentiment. Considering the difference between modern and traditional furniture, the team treated each cabinet as a separate object and refined the cabinet design to create a vintage atmosphere.
