DESIGN NAME: Shell
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewellery Collection
INSPIRATION: A memory capsulating collection inspired by a seaside fishing trip. The series explores the relationship between humans, sea life and the natural world. Taking recycled and luxury materials and combining them to create new forms.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Each piece merges a recycled natural seashell with 18ct gold. The gold is carved and wrapped around the shell in a design reminiscent of a broken fishing net, in which the shell can be seen to break through the molten gold netting, breaking boundaries between man and nature. The structure of the earrings is formed from shapes of different deep-sea creatures, reflecting the relationship between humans and sea life. Each piece is embellished with ocean-evoking aquamarines and natural diamonds.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Inspired by familiar moments by the sand and sea that evoke the memory when worn individually or together. The organic shaping of the designs and lightweight material allow for comfortable wear.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2021 in China and finished in May 2022 in the United Kingdom.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each piece was made with shell setting, using wax carving to design the 18ct gold around the shape of the shell, and set with natural diamonds, aquamarines and sapphires. The shells were hardened with a clear resin to avoid breakage while keeping the natural tones.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Exploring new balances of materials that are recycled and luxurious, delicate and durable. Experimenting new and traditional techniques in jewellery design, the concepts in Shell are an extension of the themes explored in the Dosisg6c 2022 Fish collection, which experiments with structure, shape and functionality in contemporary jewellery.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was in merging the delicate shell with the gold without damaging or breaking the shell. To overcome this, a clear resin was painted on the shell to harden it and the gold was carved and wrapped to the shell’s shape prior to setting, the shell setting technique applied similar to traditional stone setting.
