DESIGN NAME: Pace
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pre Activity Calibration Enhancer
INSPIRATION: How athletes enter the game can directly impact their performance. And most athletes have rituals before the game to bring them a sense of readiness. Pace is meant to enhance the effect of their rituals so that they can bring out their best performance, be more resilient to stress, and have a higher awareness of potential injuries.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Pace is a wearable device that enhances the athletes' existing rituals before competitive sports activities or coping with stress. It leverages the science of light and sound to increase the user's sense of readiness and mental-physical condition.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Users wear this device as a typical wireless earbud. The user can flexibly set the duration of light exposure and sync to their audio content to best match their ritual on the Pace mobile app.
The app would track and visualize the user's blood oxygen level and heart rate as indicators of prefrontal cortex activities to provide evidence that their ritual, combined with Pace, has taken effect scientifically and emotionally.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2020 in Taiwan and is now on hold indefinitely until funding is in place to move it into the next phase.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Idea and Conceptual Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Pace projects light at a specific wavelength through the ear canal and trigger the Prefrontal Cortex activation, which governs cognitive tasks such as reflexive orientation. The user gains an improved capacity to process information, which brings readiness, and accelerated decision-making time, which improves reflex.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 20mm x Depth 10mm x Height 28mm
Pace intends to integrate micro-LED to keep the design lean and energy-efficient; it will also allow better fitting with the other components for audio.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We leveraged design-thinking methodology in combination with agile principles to design our development process. Such process includes literature reviews, in-depth interviews, Focus group, to attain not just background knowledge of the technology, but also important information from the potential consumers. Basic prototype was built to test its efficacy, product design and use case was built to test market appeals.
CHALLENGE: The hardest challenge is conducting clinical efficacy tests of the technology, as it requires a large amount of funds to coordinate a sizable sample group of different ages and ethnicities. We experimented with our prototype using NIRS, a device that visualizes brain activity and oxygen level, and the result was positive, which is an increased Prefrontal Cortex activity.
